We stayed in two hotels ...

One was the grand yavuz hotel (http://www.grandyavuzhotel.com/rooms.html) in sultanahmet. IT was a nice hotel - though I did find a post here that was negative. But when we got there, I didn't find anything negative about it. If you stay for three nights (like we did) you get a free dinner - though it's not such a big deal once you realise how cheap food is. But the restaurant right at the top is charming. They also picked us up from the airport and as in the deal, they were meant to also send us to the airport. But since we weren't returning to the airport, they suggested that they drive us to our train station instead. Which was a nice surprise as the train station was a lot further than the airport.

I think I managed to negotiate via e-mail for the cost of US$45 a night (with bathroom) but that was for May.

On the way back when we stopped off in Istanbul for a night, we stayed at Hotel pamphylia (http://www.hotelpamphylia.com/) for a night and we got the room as shown in the website for $40 (I think otherwise $45). I'd advice you to take that room as it's the biggest they have. The bathroom was a little dinghy but even with that, it was fine. They were really nice to us too and even with one night, they sent us to the airport - they paid the taxi I think.

These hotels were all in the sultanahmet area. More hotels on http://www.istanbulhotels.com/

If you have any queries, send me an e-mail.

About 5 years ago we stayed at the greatest small hotel ever in Istanbul. It was called the Arcadia, and overlooked the Blue Mosque and the Bosporus (sp?). I thought I had died and went to heaven every morning having my breakfast on the rooftop staring at those two sights. It was new and well worth the cost of about $90 in a suite.

I stayed in the Blue House Hotel (Mavi Ev) opposite the Blue Mosque. Lovely, comfortble 3-star hotel about $110.00 last summer for a double room. Not a large room, but modern bathrooms, pleasant atmosphere, helpful staff. The roof restaurant is popular, and you can go up to the roof just to take in the view. I loved the location; from our window, I had a great view of the Blue Mosque.

To me, centrally located means staying in Sultanahmet, the old section of town. Taksim is not centrally located to the major sights. The most popular 4-star hotel in the area is The Four Seasons Hotel; I didn't stay there, but friends have and they raved about it.
