21-April-2016 traffic news.

There is a European action which takes place on this date which means hidden speed cameras are out in force.

Yes, we have the 'flitsmarathon' today in Belgium too.
It's easy to avoid; just stick to the speed limit.

To all who have responded so far, let me write this in crayons, so you understand.I was not posting to those that know it all. It is simply for the members here who seem to get caught easily with traffic fines when travelling around Europe.

Such drastic controls work - in France at least I understand.

When I first started driving there in the 1970s speed limits were widely ignored - flagrantly ignored - I was once in a cascade of cars going about 85 mph in a 60 mph zone on an autoroute where we all blew by a file of police cars.

But after vigorous enforcement of speed limits and especially no tolerance for drinks and driving I hear the accident rate has declined significantly. Only restaurants suffered I guess when their customers on their usual two-hour lunch break did not order the de rigueur wine with their noon meal.

It does work. The Netherlands is much stricter than Belgium, and fatalities on the road are almost double in Belgium (compared to population size).

And it's not just getting caught by one camera. In The Netherlands they calculate your average speed between A and B. If it's higher than the speed limit, you'll get fined.

My Belgian friends always get caught out, since they drive as they would in Belgium.

Tulips is right.

I drive about 30 000 kms per year.
Last year I got ONE fine in Belgium, where I drive 15 000 kms. One in NL too (100 kms/year).

It seems to get better with each generation in Belgium. The one before me drove nuder alcohol without being bothered.
I sometimes drive under alcohol telling myself afterwards I'm stupid.
My daughter left her car and came home with a friend after drinking 2 beers.

There is hope...
