20 days in Italy. Suggestions?

Hi

I'm planning a 20 roadtrip to Italy in September 2018.
My idea is to visit Rome Florence(+Tuscany) Naples+almafit coast and Sicily.

Any suggestions about how many days spend in any place?

Thank you

Julio

Car or train? Or maybe both?

Flying into Rome and out too? Or Naples - would be more ideal of course for one leg.

Could land and take train to Florence

rent car for Tuscany

take train to Naples and Amalfi (where private cars are not such a good idea as ferries are the best way in many ways to go between Amalfi places.

Anyway for lots on trains check www.trenitalia.com and www.italotreno.com - two separate railway companies running trains over same tracks - check both - booking way early can snag limited in number discounted tickets; www.seat61.com sage advice for booking your own train tickets online; for general info www.budgeteuropetravel.com and www.ricksteves.com.

Florence, Rome and Naples make driving tough - private vehicles banned from wide parts of cities.

We just returned from a 16 day trip. Flew into Florence and out of Rome. Visited Florence (obviously), the Cinque Terre, a slow week in Tuscany at my dream villa - and least expensive lodging, Venice, Naples (our least favorite), Capri, a private driver for the Amalfi coast and Rome.

I found this place years ago on Slow Travel forums and it was as wonderful as I imagined. We picked up the rental car in Florence for the week.

Julio, how many days to spend in each place depends on what your interests are, and what things are important to you.

As you say a roadtrip, I am concluding that you are renting a car? That is not necessarily the best way to get around Italy, and especially in the cities, a car is just a pain.

With that many stops, you want to use the train between places like Florence, Rome and Naples. About the only place you want a car is in Tuscany, where you can drive around and see the hilltowns, but you could rent a car for a couple of days and stay in the countryside somewhere.

From the Amalfi Coast to Sicily will take at least one long travel day, either by car or train. Then you will have to choose what you want to see in Sicily, because you could easily spend your whole 20 days there. So you will have to choose the highlights you want to see.

Also, you haven't mentioned where you are flying into. It's highly advisable to fly into one city and out of another to minimize your travel time.

Starrs, thanks for posting that villa. I had bookmarked it a few years back then lost it and could not remember the name or find it.

To the OP, September is a great time to go.
20 days is not a lot of time for all you want to do, and especially as a road trip. Where are you coming from?
How many in your group?
Have you been to Italy or Europe before?
Why a road trip? It works in some places, not in others.

Sicily is bigger than you might think, with tons to see, and is spread out, so a car is good there. You need 10 days to two weeks if you want to see major sights on both sides of the island.

Especially if you do Sicily, fly into one city and out of another. Don't backtrack by doing RT into/out of the same city. If, in the end, you skip Sicily or must absolutely do RT Rome, do not stay there twice. Go on directly to other city and put all time together in Rome at the end.

I think you need to cut something. With only a few days, one can go at breakneck speed, but longer trips require some down time once in a while. Allow 1/2 day or more to travel between places by train or plane. If you want to explore Naples and Pompeii, Capri and Positano and Amalfi, you may want to stay two places.

Possible
Arrive. Travel to first city. 1/2 to 1 day of travel
Florence + Tuscany, 5 nights (4 & 1/2 days) rent car for Tuscany
Train to Rome, or drive, but turn in car in Rome, (1/2 day of travel)
Rome, 4 or 5 nights (3 & 1/2 or 4 days)
Train plus bus to Naples or somewhere on the Amalfi Coast. (3/4 day of travel)
Naples, Sorrento, AC, etc, 5 nights (4 days)

That is now roughly a total of 14 & 1/2 days
2 to 2 & 1/2 days of travel time
12 days of sightseeing time

Just getting to and from Sicily will require two more travel days, leaving about 4 for sightseeing there.

Sassafrass, it was magical. Better than anticipated and the anticipation was high.

We took trains and planes.
Trains = early afternoon to allow for a leisurely morning and arrival in new city in time for dinner. Those travel days were not in the least stressful.
Flew from Venice to Naples to allow for more time in Venice. Great deals via EasyJet. Easy travel day there also.
