2 Week Trip to Europe--Advise needed plz

My boyfriend and I are planning a 12-14 day trip (pending time off from work) to Europe in June for his 40th b-day. He really wants to do Amsterdam and Italy but we are open to Paris and Italy or I suppose even just Italy. He doesn't want to be too rushed from location to location (i.e. 3-4 days) but there really is too much to see in Italy. He wants to be in Amsterdam for 2-3 days if we go there so if we had 12 days, that leaves us with only 8-9 in Italy. We would like to visit Rome, Florence, and Venice but I want to do the Amalfi Coast if possible.

If we did Paris and Italy, we would only spend a similar amount of time in Paris and then fly or take the train to Rome. I am open to hearing any suggestions and combinations of destinations even those not mentioned. Thank you so much!

All great destinations....I am Paris partial...wonderful city and I could never be tired of it. But, I haven't been to Amalfi and want to very much.

Venice is gorgeous and romantic.

I would just caution you from adding too many cities to your itinerary...too much travel and you see less and enjoy it less because of the time/effort to get there.

I think 12 days for all your desired destinations is not enough, if you really don't want to see those places like in a postcard.
Maybe you can do just the main cities as Paris, Rome and Florence and maybe Venice. In this way you will spend 3 days in Florence and 3 in Venice. That is not the best, but it could be enough.
If you desire to visit the Amalfi coast, you have to give up something. I think the first solution is better for the first time in Italy, but if you desire a relaxing and romantic period in a wonderfull natural, I suggest you 3 days somewhere in the Amalfi Coast.

If you do Amsterdam (or Paris)and Italy, try an open-jaw flight into Amsterdam or Paris and out of Rome. I suggest one of two itineraries if you have 14 days on the ground: Amsterdam, Venice, Florence and Rome or skip Amsterdam and add a brief stop on the Amalfi Coast. If you have less than 14 days, limit your time to Italy, visiting Venice, Florence and Rome or Florence, Rome and the Amalfi Coast. Twelve days on the ground will leave you with only 3+ days in each location when you factor in travel time between cities.

I would suggest Amsterdam instead of Paris because 2-3 days will not do Paris justice. But with 12 days, I would just skip Amsterdam and go directly to Italy.

Thanks so much for all of your replies. I am seeming to lean more with mamcalice and feel it may be best to just do Italy. I appreciate the suggestion of 2-3 days in Paris not being enough and think we'll have to return to Italy next year to and combine it with France and Amsterdam. I think we will do Venice, Florence and Rome and do 4 days in each city unless it is suggested that one city deserves more time over another. Thanks again!

I'd focus on Florence, Siena, Pisa, Lucca, Genoa which should bury you for 12 days when you add in St Gim, Pienza etc. Do you really want me to go on.

Find yourselves a hotel of gite with a pool and hire a car/base yourself near a station.

If you have to fit in Rome do it while passing through
