2 Week England/Scotland Itinerary Help

You might also look at dropping your car at Inverness airport where you can fly nonstop to Heathrow for around sixty quid. Most UK car hire/rental companies won't hit you for one-way or drop-off fees.
That would reduce the amount of driving the last day and would be price-competitive with the train, all things considered.
With your timing I'd rule out the trains as they make getting to LHR overly complicated and time consuming.

Not if they opt to stay IN central London that night. But otherwise - yes.
Good point -- flying from Inverness, or even Glasgow, would be a better alternative than driving back to EDI.

We are retuning our rental car in York on Day 13 and taking the train to Edinburgh. We won't have a car in Scotland - we'll be joining a 3 day Isle of Skye Rabbies Tour.
I think taking the 8:30pm BA flight from EDI to LHR sounds best - since it is just a quick 90 minute flight. We'll do an early dinner in Edinburgh, around 5pm then head to the EDI airport around 6 or 6:30pm. This option sounds like the least amount of time wasted in travel and gets us to LHR without having to worry about travel delays. Maybe we can find a hotel near LHR that offers a good breakfast.

Oh -- yes - since you are on a tour you'll have to return to Edinburgh.
In that case, flying will be easiest.
Just about all of the hotels around the airport have restaurants. But me personally -- I'd just eat at LHR. Much better choice of food in the departure lounge than at most airport area hotels.
I think you'll be flying out of T-4
If so these are the restaurants in the departure lounge: http://www.heathrow.com/shops-and-re...geStartNumber=

very wise decision. Travel disruptions happen when you need the services the most sometimes it seems!
