2 or 3 Extra Days Before London

My boyfriend and I have a trip planned to London in early July and have 2 or 3 (we can be flexible) days once we land in London to do something else. We are debating between Amsterdam (though we have received a lot of mixed reviews), Edinburgh, the Channel Islands (likely Jersey), Bath or staying in London the whole time and taking day trips. I am not sure if we will really enjoy that many day trips and we are not into the very regimented tours so these are factors as well. If anyone has any thoughts, suggestions or information that may be helpful in figuring this out, I would greatly appreciate it! Thanks in advance!

Some possiblities:

Take a train north from London and visit York, then on to Edingburgh. York is an interesting walled city, about halfway to Edingburgh.

Bath is another fine small city--just over an hour away from London by rail. It could be done as a daytrip, but really deserves more time to explore. If you rented a car, you could see some nice areas of the countryside near here.

And yes, there are many daytrips that you can take from London. Places like Kew Botanic Gardens, Hampton Court, Windsor/Eton, Salisbury/Stonehenge, Greenwich, Brighton, Rye....All of these can be done without "regimented tours".

Hi stusi18
Take the train from London Paddington to the Capital City of Wales... Cardiff. Visit our castles and museums, shop til you drop in the wonderful arcades and see one of the fastest growing cosmopolitan cities in Europe.
Great pubs and clubs if you want it and fabulous theatres and sporting venue at the Millenium Stadium.

Good Luck

Thank you for your advice, it is much apprecaited. We are now hearing very mixed things about Amsterdam. Does anyone have any advice if we were to land at Gatwick and take a flight to Amsterdam for 3 nights before going to London?

I went to Amsterdam with my then 9 year old daughter 2 1/2 years ago in February and we LOVED it. (We too flew for 3 days from Gatwick) We stayed in a house boat on a canal that was great (look on vrbo.com), rented bikes (at Mike's bikes)and rode all over in the rain, ate good food at Wagamama, and went to several museums. The best and most moving was the Anne Frank house. Don't miss it. We felt safe everywhere and have very fond memories of our trip. Of course, it will be summer when you are there so I don't know how crowded it gets or what the weather is like. We enjoyed the winter time.
