Group discounts require 10 or more people.

You have all been such a big help! I'm floored. Thank you so much. I'm sharing all of this with my two traveling buddies. I'm very surprised that Pompeii isn't a daytrip from Capri. That's going to change things... One of the reasons we were looking at several days on Capri is because we wanted a chance to slow down and enjoy what will hopefully still be warm weather and relax a bit.

Again, thank you SO MUCH.

You can day trip from Capri to Pompeii. The ferry from Capri to Sorrento takes 25 minutes. At the port, walk up the hill to Piazza Tasso (climb the steps you see at the curve in the road) or take the bus (half the time tour groups have control of the buses), the train station is a couple of blocks to your left from Piazza Tasso(it should only take about 10 minutes to walk from the port), train to Pompeii Scavi stop (travel time is about 25-30 minutes and trains leave every 30 minutes - 1.90€). Pompeii is just across the street from the Pompeii Scavi stop. You just have to make sure you don't miss the last return ferry to Capri.

Leslie,

I may have misspoken about daytripping from Capri to Pompeii. There are ferries which can take you from Capri Town to Naples (another advantage to staying near Capri Town): http://www.capri.net/en/ship-timetable You'd need to verify the schedules for your date of travel as they vary depending on high season vs low season.

You would then have to get from the Naples port to Pompeii and back. Taxis could take you but that would be pricey. Also, it looks like some tour companies could pick you up at the port and take you to and from. Here's one although I don't know anything about them:

But you'd have to make sure the ferry schedule coming back fits your timeline.

So it's doable but make sure you have everything mapped out routewise and timewise to see if it makes sense for your group.

Leslie, perhaps the easiest way to get to Pompeii would be to hit it on the way to Rome as you're leaving Capri. After seeing Pompeii and maybe the museum in Naples where much of the Pompeii treasures are displayed, you could hopefully take one of the super fast high speed trains to Rome (less than 2 hours).

Doesn't make sense to go to Naples. That would take longer since the travel time Capri/Naples is 45-50 minutes and the travel time Capri/Sorrento is 25-29 minutes. Naples is also much more hectic and will take a bit longer to get from the port to the train station although there is a tram you can catch if you have tickets. Walking from the port is an option if you can get across the very busy Naples streets. The train from Naples to Pompeii is also a 5-10 minutes longer than Sorrento/Pompeii.

Stopping on the way back to Rome is a good idea. You would still ferry to Sorrento and catch the train to Pompeii. You can store your luggage at the entrance to Pompeii. The luggage storage is free. Sorry, the info is only in Italian on their website.

Hi Leslie! Really take the car-less suggestions to heart - and this is coming from a fellow Portlander! We were in Florence/Tuscany/Rome last September, so email me if you want some restaurant and sightseeing suggestions!

I agree on getting to Pompeii on the way to Rome (Pompeii is a MUST) but not with going into Naples. Maybe on your second trip. But it is too hectic and crtowded and overwhelminhg IMHO given everything else you are trying to do. And personally I wouldn't spend two days in Capri but then I'm not much for relaxation on trips, so others may disagree.[erspona;;yu
