1st night in Italy???

We will be arriving mid afternoon and then going to Positano or Ravello ( still deciding). My question is where do we stay that first night since we will have to take a train to Naples I assume to get to the Coast. Would love any suggestions on where and what we should do the day we arrive,

We will be jet lagged and just flying in fromour wedding the night before in New York.

What should we do?

Fairsat, I would think you would be exhausted after your wedding festivities and a transatlantic flight. I would suggest you stay in Rome wander around the city for a few hours then have dinner at a rooftop restaurant. The next morning you would be fresher to either drive or train to the coast.

We go to Italy at least once a year to visit family near Naples and to travel around Italy more. We always spend the first night and last night in Rome. There is so much to see and we still haven't see it all. It's a long flight and you need time to regroup. The first time we went to Italy we flew into Milan and took the train to Venice. Too much. We should have stayed in Milan and walked the city and taken the train to Venice the next day.

I agree, you'll be exhausted, sack out in Rome and head out the next day. It'll also give you an opportunity to get a very cursory "feel" for Rome in advance of your return. Bon voyage! Rome was my favorite city in Italy (though that's kind of like picking your favorite flavor of ice cream).

Have you thought about flying into Naples? Having your final destination as Naples won't cost much more, if anything, than having Rome be your final stop. We did this several years ago and it was the same price for either Rome or Naples. Then you can have a car service pick you up at the airport in Naples and take you to your hotel in Positano or Ravello. The Sirenuse in Positano would be a wonderful place for a honeymoon and it is very easy for them to arrange for a driver. When we did it, I believe it cost $90 from the airport to the Sirenuse. That way, you will be at your hotel on the Amalfi Coast in the early afternoon and relaxing in the sun by the pool.
