If you printed the tickets yourself at home then you dont need to validate them. Otherwise you do. Car number 3 could be anywhere. Often two train sets are attached and the numbers are not always in the same order. For example the first train set could be cars 18-9 with 18 at the front of the platform. Then when you get to the second set rather than it starting with 8 it starts with 1. You just have to read the digital display on the side of the car.

When you get to the platform there may very well be a printed diagram of your particular train which shows the placement and number of each car.

They dont have those in Paris because it is the beginning of the line always. However in places like Lyon where the train might only stop for 3 minutes there is a screen that displays the location of the cars so you know where to stand while waiting.

Unless I'm on a night train, I would recommend second class.

I'm not so sure about "quieter" in 1st class: on our trip from Avignon to Paris on the TGV, 4 men were playing cards (and drinking) and they were raucous. That was farther down the car. The older man sitting opposite us talked loudly on his cellphone for 1/2 hr., even though cellphone use is frowned upon (signs posted. The trip to Avignon, 1st class, was, however, peaceful. It's the luck of the draw, IMO.

I have this same question for the TGVs to Bordeaux and Arcachon. Any differences? Are these trains duplex as well?
