We visited Croatia (+Bosnia, Montenegro) in September last year, a memorable trip and (sadly) our last major holiday before the virus outbreak.
On your Plitvice questions, we actually stayed in an airbnb a short walk from Entrance 1 (this is the preferred start) and were amongst the first to arrive next morning around 7am to get a headstart over the crowds. I suppose the Miric Inn could arrange an early drop. We had spent a fair bit of time in advance planning out our route (Program C) and found https://www.earthtrekkers.com/how-to...-travel-guide/ a very useful pre-read.

Looks like a great itinerary! We only spent two nights in Split and it was enough, but we spent 5 nights in Dubrovnik which was really more than we needed. I wish I had gone to Hvar for a couple of days.

As a US citizen living in Istria, I'm sorry you won't be able to visit the area as to me it is an extremely special place not on many American's radar. Maybe next time? I just wanted to agree with the person who recommended a day trip to Šibenik and possibly Krka National Park, as both are extraordinary places and Krka is just as fascinating or even more so than Plitvice as you get to swim in the waterfalls on your visit there. Krka park is going to do away with allowing people in the waterfall after this year, but as someone who visited there in June of this year, it was truly one of the highlights of my time the last two years in Croatia. You will want to come back to Croatia, I think! What a treat to see Dubrovnik without the crowds! I'm heading there in the fall as well. Sretan put (Pleasant journey!)

Last fall we stayed in Lovran for a few nights, the coastal walk is beautiful.
One day we drove down the coast to Labin, and the lady in a tourist office marked up a map with a route that would take us through small villages, and loop back to the coastal road. Very few people at all, much less tourists. Enjoyable to wander through the small towns, checking out churches, petting cats, relaxing; had a great meal meal on a patio overlooking a valley to cap off the day, all very affordable. The hotel in Lovran was a former summer villa, one of the most comfortable rooms I've stayed in, for under $100 usd (Hotel Villa Eugenia).

So yes, I think you are spot on with comments. We'll make it Rovinj next time. And seeing Portoroz again, with 30 years between visits, that was neat.

But don't you say you don't receive the results until you land in Dubrovnik (after passing through, I believe you said, Vienna)? So it's possible you could have Covid while you're travelling?

It feels like the purpose of your question is to scold me rather than true concern, so I’ll cut that off at the knees by saying that I’ll be taking a rapid, non PCR
test the day before. It provides results in 30 minutes.

Will you be doing a tr? I'd love to hear about it. WE did a domestic trip last month and I did a TR--a very different one than usual, but thought it might be useful for anyone thinking of traveling. The same might hold true for your far more adventurous trip. Travel in the Time of COVID

I would not hesitate to travel anywhere in Croatia in early October, enjoy! It may be quiet in some island towns, but the season gets longer every year and this year, who knows?

A message for MinnBeef, just informational.. not sure when you are coming in September, but in Hvar and I am sure on Korcula too, many restaurants and shops will be starting to close in mid September which is a good four to six weeks early for Hvar Town. There will still be places open, but it may be pretty quiet the last two weeks of September on the islands. Earlier and you will not have a problem, and there is nothing wrong with quiet, except it is more limited for choice. They managed to eek out a bit of a season, but it is pretty much over now.

Thanks rialtogrl. I leave this coming Tues. I expect to be on Korcula the 12th and 13th and Hvar the 14 and 15th. My original hotel in Korcula informed me a week ago that they were closing this past week. Fortunately I found another that is staying open.

Here’s hoping much of the charm of these two islands is in their inherent beauty and that that will be combined with good weather!

MinnBeef it’s coming up fast! I think you will get to Hvar in time.. yesterday I was at Falko bar (you must go) and they told me they will stay open till October 1. The weather has been great, cooling down in the evenings, I think you will be happy.
