13 Days in Italy, late September

Hello,
My fiance and I booked our honeymoon flights today to Italy! Hooray! We have 13 days and are very amibitious about what we want to see - who knows when we will be back? So, we're flying into Rome on Monday 9/17, returning flight from Venice on 9/30.

I am trying to work out a skeleton itinerary for our trip but I am overwhelmed. We plan to move around a lot (not the ideal relaxing honeymoon but we really enjoy sightseeing).
We are interested mostly in eating and general sight-seeing - walking, hiking, outdoorsy stuff.

So, with the basic itinerary below, my questions are - how much do we need to budget a night for hotel/B&B? We don't need anything super-fancy, just a clean place to stay. I'd like the nicest accomodations for our stay in Amalfi because I am considering that the veg-out and relax part of the vaca. Is $150/night enough?

Any recommendations on where to stay?

What is the temperature difference between Amalfi and Venice in terms of what we need to pack? Will it be beach weather on the coast that time of year?

Is there any way to fit in the Cinque Terra to our itinerary?

Tues/Wed- 2 nights in Rome
Thurs/Fri/Sat/Sun - 4 nights somewhere in the Amalfi Coast region
Mon/Tues/Wed/Thurs - 4 nights in Florence, perhaps a day trip to Siena - do we have time to explore Tuscany?
Fri/Sat/Sun - 3 nights in Venice

If you haven't been to Rome before, you really need to add more nights there as you will be jet lagged arrival day so you are only leaving yourself one sightseeing day.

I would probably head to the Amalfi coast on arrival day and Rome next.

Does Florence interest you more than the Tuscany countryside? If not, you could visit Tuscany with a day trip to Florence.

>>>Is $150/night enough<<<

That's 114€. What amenities are you expecting for that price?

I actually think your itinerary is fine for a honeymoon and your stated interests, which seem to be more about being outdoors and sightseeing nature than exploring the Vatican or the sights of Roman antiquity. If I'm wrong about that, you've got to make a list of the sights you want to see in Rome and then count up how many hours will need to see them and make sure you are staying long enough.

Bring swim gear for both the Amalfi and the beaches of Venice (the latter are shabby, and you probably won't want go go, but the weather is in the same range).

Florence is the capital of Tuscany, and if by "explore Tuscany" you mean visit the adjacent wine country and their pretty hilltowns with views, then it is not only a question of how much time you want to spend in the art museums and churches of Florence, it is also a question of how are you going to get to the hills full of vineyards without a car?

Your lodging budget means you will have to search for bargains along the Amalfi coast. I would look at towns like Furore or Serra or Atrani as place to stay, not Positano, etc. An apartment is usually cheaper than a hotel, and more fun.

If you are supersensitive the heat, you may need air conditioning in Florence even in late September. I would want it in Venice so I could shut the windows at night to keep mosquitoes out of the room.

I think you will needlessly complicated your trip by trying to fit in le Cinque Terre, especially since you are including the Amalfi coast on this trip.

I guess your flights have already been booked/purchased. It might have been better to land at Naples and spend the first days of your honeymoon in the Amalfi Coast area.

Assuming you will use only public trans to get around, below are some travel times to help you understand how much time you'll have in a place after you've arrived. Considering these are only the actual train journeys and don't include the time needed to get to/from the stations, you'll see that you lose a lot of time moving from place to place.

Rome to "somewhere in the AC Region"
2.5 to about 3.5 hours, depending on the "somewhere"

AC Region to Florence
4-5 hours, depending on your starting point

Florence to the Cinque Terre (Manarola, for example)
3 hours

Florence to Venice
2 hours

Manarola to Venice
6 hours

In terms of "exploring Tuscany," there are several places you can explore on day trips from Florence using public trans. But there is a lot to see in Florence itself, so you need to decide what you want to see/do in Florence and how much time that will require before you can determine whether you have time to make multiple day trips.

Naples would have been better to fly into, but it was much more expensive. I know the Amalfi Coast to be more expensive in terms of lodging, and I am planning to spend more there. In the other places, we don't plan to spend much time in our room - too much to see!

As for sightseeing... I just want to see the city on our feet... I am not into museums or the Vatican, just as you (zeppole) assumed.

I guess in terms of Tuscany I was wondering if we would be able to maybe spend a day biking around the hillsides. That might be a naive notion, though.

I would love suggestions for affordable/clean lodging in these areas... and if we need to bump up the per night budget we'll adjust accordingly. Just wondered if we could get by with $150/night... We were in Paris in June last year and had a wonderful hotel for less than that price.
