12 hour layover in Rome - tour?
Hello all,
My father has a 12+ hour layover in Rome (Fiumicino). Granted it is on December 31st, but is there a tour company that does short city tours where they can pick him up at the airport and drop him back off there? He get's in at 8am and does not have to leave until after 8pm. Because of the language barrier and the fact that he would be nervous about missing his flight, I would rather have someone pick him up and drop him off rather than try on his own.
Any help is appreciated!!

Although I haven't personally used this tour company, they get consistantly high reveiews on Fodors and SlowTravel. This is their link for private tours with pickup at a hotel but I'm sure they would accomodate an airport pickup.

Rome is easy. Hire a cab into town to see the Trevi fountain, Piazza Navona, etc. He can enjoy a nice lunch at a local trattoria, walk around for a few hours and then catch a cab back to the airport by 4 pm.
There is also a hop-on bus that would serve as a tour guide too, and I am sure the local taxi services could advise him on the pick-up locations.
Nearly everyone in Rome speaks at least some English and it isn't difficult to find someone who does.
If he is worried about finding a taxi for the return to the airport, you can book a car in advance and agree on a pickup location and time.

You might try DriverinItaly.com. Highly reliable, if not economical. We used them for transfers for three legs of our trip to Italy last spring, a trip to Naples/Pompeii/Positano, as well as a four hour tour of Rome itself. I would not risk taxis or group tours, given your father's narrow window.

Check out www.RomeCabs.com, too.I used them for airport transfers when I was in Rome a week ago. They also offer private tours. I was so impressed with their service and my driver, Enza was just lovely. They get excellent reviews on Fodors and TripAdvisor.
If your dad isn't feeling confident venturing by himself a private guide might be just the thing - or atleast a limo pick up to and from the airport connecting him with an organized day tour of the city.
Remember Rome is an international tourist destination and most visitors don't speak Italian so your dad will be able to manage.
