11 Night Itinerary Help: Germany (Romantic Road) and Prague
Hello all,
My fiancee and I are exploring honeymoon options for an early December trip later this year--we're going warm (islands) or frigid (Germany/Prague). For the colder option, we would like to spend 11 nights in Germany (the Romantic Road region) and Prague. We're open to flying into/out of different cities, and would be game to drive if that's easier than a train.
As I am just now starting to investigate this choice, I wanted to ping out at Fodor's--we've always gotten amazing advice and a good dose of reality where needed.
So...does anyone have familiarity with this kind of an itinerary? What should we NOT MISS? Are we being too ambitious?
Thanks in advance for any thoughts,
StPeteAlly

Doing the whole Romantic Road, or even a healthy part of it, normally requires a car unless you want some time-consuming train + bus connections. But really, the Romantic Road completely bypasses a whole lot of interesting (and really romantic places) in Bavaria anyway. Bamberg, Nuremberg, Regensburg, Bayreuth, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Berchtesgaden, and smaller places like Iphofen and Weißenburg are all places you would miss by sticking to the RR. Würzburg, Rothenburg, Nördlingen, Augsburg, and Füssen, along with several other Romantic Road towns, all have train stations and are not hard to get to without a car. So if you're inclined to use trains, it will be quite easy to put together an itinerary that hits both RR and non-RR towns and points of interest.
The map on this page shows the hundreds of destinations available by train:

The Bayern ticket ("Bavaria Ticket" daypass) will get you to all the above destinations in Bavaria - and to Salzburg Austria as well:

Transportation between Bavaria and Prague is usually best accomplished by bus. The DB website provides itinerary information for this and all other trips:

You'll be in Bavaria during the Christmas market season. Lucky you:
