10 days in Italy - where should we go?
Three couples celebrating 50th birthdays in late June with trip to Italy. Have 10 days. Would like to see Rome and Naples. Where else should we go? Any suggested itinerary? Round trip or multi-legged? Rent a car, fly or
drive between cities?

Jean,
I think you should pick up a few guides from the library and flip through the pages. Take a look at some of the regions and decide what kind of a trip you all want. Do you want to focus on art or food? Do you want to rent a villa together in Tuscany and enjoy some cooking classes? Do you want the water - a visit to the Amalfi Coast from Naples is a great trip -- Are you all going to stay together during the whole trip -- if so check into the villas and agriturism sites. Hope some of this helps.

Jean - much of the decision is based on what you like - are you into art, museums and architecture, or are you into different, quaint, exciting, food, scenery, big city, small village, walking, discovering or ?????????????
There is so much information on this forum but your question is too vague. I would heavily reserach Naples - much negative on this board. But then again, why, where and when??

With that in mind, we just did 18 days in Italy - one week with an escorted tour and the rest on our own. For what it is worth, here is the itinerary: Orvieto, Todi, Assisi, Siena, Florence, Rome. Car in Rome to Umbria, Tuscany for two days, dumped car in Florence, train to Venice, train to Santa Margherita and the Cinque Terre and train to Milan and home to Floriduh. Any questions, e-mail me BTW, the trip was a 9.5 on a 10 scale.

Hi Jean,
It's true, you really do need to do some research. Go to the bookstore and thumb thru some books. Rome is gorgous, lots to do and see. Florence is great if you like art and museums, and of course Venice is a must see. Lake Como is very beautiful, but not too much to do except relax and be on the water. I've not been to Tuscany, but will go on my next trip. A great book for research is Eyewitness Guide to Italy, it divides up the country into regions, will give you pix and text on all of the areas so you can think about where you want to go. Also, do a search on this forum or just go to yahoo and type in "italy" and start reading.

Hey -

You MUST see Florence!! - My wiofe and I were in Italy last summer - Florence was the best of Rome - Venice - and Florence!
The best restaurant was Il Latini - very good and a nice experinece - great owner - The people in the town were SO freindly - we met a young (30's) couple - my wife and I are (were) 49 - and closed up 3 bars - and they barely spoke English - great people!!

Anyway - try to get there - Well worth it!!
