10 Days in Austria

I was very fortunate to recently win a trip to Austria. The trip was co-sponsored by Riedel Glass, and includes 2 nights in Kufstein, Austria and a tour of the Riedel factory. Obviously, I don't want to travel all the way from the U.S. to Austria for two nights, so we are interested in options to extend our trip for 10 days or so. The only other time we have been to Austria was on a Danube River cruise a couple of years ago. I would welcome suggestions on other places to visit while we are in the area. We are a couple in our early 60's and enjoy sightseeing, museums & dining. We have a year to take our trip, and were thinking of going in October, 2018 (but we are open to suggestions about travel dates, too). We appreciate any tips!

Well Vienna-Salzburg are always nice in any weather and fall in this area could be damp and cool -or may not be. Anyway check out the trains that are best for going to cities mainly - cars great for rural areas. Good train info - www.oebb.com - Austrian railways; www.westbahn.com (competitor to Austrian Rail on main east-west route and always cheap); www.seat61.com; www.budgeteuropetravel.com and www.ricksteves.com.

Earlier in fall the better - could bop up to Munich by train from Kufstein in little over an hour and hit Octoberfest! Maybe Munich-Salzburg-Vienna in 8 days - better if you can add a couple.

If driving, there are a few monasteries that are worth a visit, as seen in this album:

If you can, September would be a fantastic time to experience one of the numerous Almabtrieb, the traditional festivals celebrating a safe alpine summer, complete with fancily decorated livestock and festivities (eating and drinking). Tirolean cuisine is our favorite of all the Austrian varieties, and the festivals offer plenty of it.

Alternatively, or in addition to the cow parades, harvest festivals and vineyard hiking is happening in the wine regions around Vienna. In mid-September the village of Gumpoldskirchen hosts its "Genussmeile;" and on the last weekend in September Vienna hosts "Wien Weinwandertag," each offering trails through the vineyards where the vintners set up little huts and offer their varietal.

Another option for September or early October would be to incorporate a drive along the Großglockner High Alpine Road. From Kufstein you would not be too far, but the activity would need an overnight.

I hope this is helpful.

Some great ideas for Austria above but you could go other places besides Austria - like from Salzburg to Prague then back to Munich - assuming you are flying into Munich? Or, could fly open jaw into Munich and say out of Prague or Vienna, etc.
