I've done those sort of journeys a few times, Dieppe or Le Havre in and Cherbourg or North Britanny (St Malo or Roscoff) back. The trick is to minimise driving on the very small roads in some of those areas

Actually thinking about it you could worse than just driving along the coast from Calais - the north French coast is wonderful for the most part, and then get your ferry to Jersey, or home further along, if you prefer more of a road trip. Spend some time in Calais, it is overlooked but interesting.

If you do decide on Calais then can I suggest Hotel de la Page in Calais. Simple rooms but friendly staff, a great restaurant and breakfast, about 15 minutes from the ferry terminal, same from the Tunnel, and as the name suggests on the seafront. Just don't believe Google Maps directions to it!

Why Le Mans? Why Nantes? Again you are spending a lot of time driving, and don't forget tolls if you are driving on French motorways.

Also bear in mind days will be getting shorter, weather could be getting wetter and cooler.
Are there any other towns that way..doing a loop from the ferry port to Jersey and back to UK you would recommend

I thought Nantes was a nice place ?

well, it sort of is, but there are some very special places like Bayeux, St Malo, Dinan, Quimper or Honfleur which are right up there and then there are some ok places like Nantes

Thanks for that. I'll take a look

We use airbnb in the uk but not sure whether we should just use hotels in france for short 1/2 night stays

you might like www.logishotels.com which are independant small hotels all over France, you can see who has great chefs etc. We tend to use it for one or two nights. Other chains exist, but these are more the essence of France.
