10 day in Italy ( firs time)

Hi,
I am looking for an advice on a 10-11- day trip itinerary in Italy next June. We will fly in and out of Rome.
I would like to divide this time between 2-3 cities ( including possibly a countryside) from wich we are thinking to do day trips.
Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Dan

Dan,

Is it too late to change to fly in/out from Venice or Milan? It'd save you a world of needless backtracking.

Hi knickerbocker,
No it is not too late to change the flghts but it has to be same city in and out ( I will be using my travel points). I will be flying from Minneapolis (US) to Italy

Really? Well that completely bites! You're certain about that? Mrs. K and I did Toronto-Amsterdam-Paris and then returned Rome-Toronto last year on Air Miles. But if your plan's that way, I'd suggest seeing if you could do Ryanair or one of the other discount airlines immediately after arrival in Rome and get yourself up to Venice to work your way back down to Rome. Since this is your first time to Italy, unless you have some strong notions of places you definitely want to get to, I'd say do 3 days in Venice, 4 in Florence and the rest in Rome, taking the Eurostar between each. Venice is a good place to de-jetlag and it's a great introduction to Italy. There's a lot to do in and around Florence and the same is definitely true for Rome.

Given your timeframe, I don't know that you really have enough time to do countryside without shortchanging the cities. But I'll let someone with Italian countryside experience chime in.

You might want to check with your airline - often their partner airlines will allow you to fly into one city and out of another; we've done that with United using Swiss Air, Lufthansa, LOT, etc to Italy the last few years. Pls remember that you'll have 8-9 days on the ground with travel on each end so 3 cities could be a bit of a rush. I'd look at Venice/Florence or Rome/Florence as combinations. If you do either of those, you 'might' be able to spend a day or so in Tuscany enroute from Rome to Florence or vice versa or see Verona between Florence and Venice.

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately I am dealing with CITI Bank reward card travel points also known as Thankyou Network. This program is a sham. I started it 3 years ago; they changed the terms a year ago, increased the limit for travel and imposed addtiional restriction including same city in and out.My points are going to expire in a year so I want to get as much as I can from it before canceling this cerdit card.

Hi D,

A: Fly in/out of Florence FLR or Pisa PSA.

Immediately train to Venice - 3 nights.

Rent a car and drive through Tuscany - 4 nights.

Return car in Florence - 3 nights.

If you can;t get PSA or FLR, fly in/out of Milan.

Fly in/out of Rome.

Immediately take the train to Salerno and the Ferry to Amalfi or Positano.

Amalfi coast - 4 nights.

Take the train to Rome from Salerno.
6 nights in Rome.

Enjoy Italy.

Choices, Choices,
I feel lost.
Rome- Salerno-Amalfi or Rome- Venice-Naple-Rome.
But I like the Amalfi adea.
Can you please help to detail the itinerary.
These are my constraints:
1. I need to spend some time in Rome.
2. I need to fly in and out of the same city
3. I do not want to have more than 3 hotel changes.
4. This trip will have to occure in June.

Yes,
I am willing to rent a car for a few days ( not for the entire trip) if it makes sense over train.

Thanks
Dan
