1 whole day in Frankfurt Germany -what should we not miss?

My Mom has never been to Europe. We have a whole day in Frankfurt before continuing to Greece. Please advise a nice (affordable though) place for lunch/dinner and the "do not miss" sites. I've never been to Germany though I'm an avid traveler.

Many people don't care for Frankfurt. I think it's very nice for a day or so. It can be a rather dry, financial center kinda place if you walk too far north of the city center. Just don't do that.

The main square downtown is beautiful. Very, very old German looking with a beautiful cathedral and its museum. Into poetry? Goethe's family home is a museum close by. There are a couple of more churches in the area worth seeing. As well as a Jewish Museum and a historical museum of Frankfurt.

You can then walk across the river to the museum district. With a half dozen to choose from you can pick what you want: Applied Arts, Ethnography, German Architectural, German Postal, State Art Museum and Sculpture.

I've not been in several years, so I can't really recommend a restaurant.

What time are you arriving? If you truly have a whole day, you would possibly have time for a quick train trip to the Rhine castle area, or to Heidelburg.

Thank you IndyTravel.

To my other friend, we arrive at 9am and fly out at 9pm. Probably need 2 hour check in (7pm). We will not have baggage-its checked all the way in...Is that much beter than Frankfurt?

It really depends on your interests. By the time you deplane and leave the airport and then have to start back to the airport probably around 6 PM or so, you'll have 8 hours or so. What do you and Mom like to do, see? How's your health and stamina?

We too only had one day in Frankfurt. We took a tour bus (I believe it was about 2-3 hours) and saw absolutely everything! Then we had a delicious meal at a fabulous beer garden.

It depends on how tired you are. I am not knocking Frankfurt, all I saw of it was the airport, and I understand it does have a small "old town". If you do have the energy, you can take a train ride of about an hour to either Heidelburg or Wiesbaden and spend an enjoyable afternoon. Heidelburg has a famous ruined castle and traditional German architecture, Wiesbaden is a very nice spa town. But whether it's worth the hastle or not, I don't know. By the way the Germany train system website is www.bahn.de - click on international guests and you can get timetables and prices.
