Grew up in London, now in DC metro area. Agree about Ethiopian being great cuisine in DC area. Huge number of wonderful Asian restaurants in metro area: Vietnamese, Korean, Indian and Thai amongst the best.

Since I live in MD, have to put a word in for crabs and crab cakes!

When I go "home," I pig out on pork pies (pun intended). Miss those like crazy, together with English tea time, sausages/sausage rolls, puddings, good crusty bread, fresh cream, English breakfast, Dolly Mixture and other sweeties! *sigh*

Poplar Bluff MO USA, my home town. Go to Hayden's ("world's best&quot for BBQ sandwich topped with chopped cabbage, deep fried mushrooms, and a pink lemonade. After that? If you don't have anyone to visit, get back in your car, cruise Main St. once, and resume your journey.

If in Santa Fe NM, one of my college towns, get to Tia Sophia's early, before the line forms for breakfast, and go for the huevos rancheros.

From Chicago originally, too, and agree with deep dish pizza at Lou Malnati's (or Due's). Would also add Italian beef sandwiches ( try
Mr. Beef).

I'm originally from all over the U.S., but I've made the Chicago area my home for the past 21 years or so. And as others have noted, deep-dish pizza is one of our signature dishes...and I concur with those recommending Lou Malnati's.

But we are also well known for our ribs (Carson's or Twin Anchors), as well as our beef steaks (Gene & Georgetti, Morton's, Chicago Chop House). And don't forget the Italian beef sandwich (Mr. Beef), or the Chicago-style hot dog (The Wiener's Circle).

1. Montréal

2. Jardin de Panus, a Greek restaurant on Duluth St., for marinated lamb chops. I went to Greece this fall and didn't have lamb chops as good as at J de P.

A very fun thread!

Newcastle Brown Ale is also my husband's favorite beer. I like it too. Particularly when I can get it on draft. It seems to be so much more widely available in bars in the Chicago area in the past couple of years. I found your post about it to be very interesting, Caroline.

I grew up in a small town in southern Illinois called Breese. For the most part, the restaurants in the area are nothing special (with the exception of Popeye's Chop House in nearby St. Rose, which is very good). But one thing most of the restaurants in the area do very well, and something not easily found most other places, is fried chicken livers. Many of the restaurants in the area serve chicken liver or gizzard baskets. My kids insist on getting them at least once every time we visit their grandmother!

Oh how I love Skyline Chili! My husband was born in Cincinnati and we used to get it when we visited. Now his grandmother, who lives in Indianapolis, buys cans of Skyline Chili for us at her local grocer....not the same but helps give us a little fix!

The western suburbs of Philadelphia are already well represented(Downingtown here)but I thought I'd throw in my agreement with the Tony Luke's pork and brocolli rabe sandwich. As to where to go for your cheesesteak, well, fist fights have broken out over this subject so I won't go out on a limb and say (but Jim's on South St will do in a pinch.)

CAPH, Breeze used to have a small drive-thru ice cream place that made the best vanilla malts. We used to get them on the way to or from Carlyle Lake in the summers. Last time I was in Breeze, which was quite a while since I moved from Southern Illinois to Charlotte, the drive thru turned into a larger restaurant and the malts were dissapointing. But whenever I think of Breese I think of those yummy vanilla malts!

Well, we've got great crabs here in Maryland. I love Mike's in Anapolis. The best!

Eau Claire, WI

Lutefisk, lefse, and other Norwegian delicacies served around Christmas. Increasingly difficult to find, though.

Well, gracie04, count me in as a Pensacola fodorite!
Yup. Lots of fresh Seafood here. I love raw oysters! Joe Patti's is a popular fish market here.

When I first moved south, someone once handed me a wet peanut and I thought they were crazy. Turns out boiled peanuts (often sold along the side of the road.) are normal fare here!!! Actually, they're quite good once you get past the texture!

Lytham, Uk
Fish and Chips / Lancashire Hot Pot

Carolinetaylor - only a true Geordie would compare to the French Fizz - you are showing your pround colours!

Jamikins - Vancouver - we found the most diverse eating city in the world - take aways seemed to be at silly low prices - the sushi just kept on coming - we are missing it as it is stupidly priced in the UK.

Fish and chips wrapped in paper.

Roast lamb with mint sauce.

Best place to eat them - in Nz or Australia.

Suki:
Also agree with you guys about Tony Luke's pork sandwich, but there is a place on Belmont Ave near the Schuylkill Expressway that has the biggest cheesesteaks I've ever seen in my life, can't remember the name of the place though, sorry.

Pensacola people

please help - we sailed from Navarre 3 years ago and used to eat the best fried fish nosh up we have ever had - it was in a bar with a volleyball pitch in the bar! it was on the left going to Navarre marina - any ideas - can't remember what it was called - also had on of the best meals ever - beach barbecue in the little snick bolthole anchorage just past the Gulf entrance near Perdido Cay. Dolphins, Mantas and Sharks circled the boat all night - slept for 6 minutes that night - who needs Disneyworld!

BTW Navarre yacht club is akin to Disneyworld - what a bunch of characters - wouldn't know where to begin to write about that one!

And to SemiMike:
My wife is from South Philly and cringes at you putting red gravy on a cheesesteak. You don't do that if you are from Philly! Whiz, wit is the only way.
