DinPa: "My wife is from South Philly and cringes at you putting red gravy on a cheesesteak. You don't do that if you are from Philly! Whiz, wit is the only way."

It's true, I am not a native (no cheesesteaks of note in Chicago), and so I am unencumbered by local traditions. And the red gravy appeals to my Italian heritage!

True story: Friend of mine went into a Bay Area place advertising genuine Philly cheesesteaks, and was asked "Do you want sprouts on that?" <sigh>

*Coffee, coffee and more coffee

*Beer! Local microbrews from Rogue, Widmer, Bridgeport, Laurelwood...

*Anything you find at our Farmer's Markets is fresh in season and grown locally, like within 30 miles

*Cheese! Tillamook is world-renowned, and there are lots of small cheesemaking operations

Hmmm... I'm in Gainesville (north central Florida) and the only thing I can really think of as regional is Gator - Yes, we eat it, yes, it's tasty, but it can be horrible and rubbery if cooked wrong.

It's not my favorite though - I'll go with the fresh seafood the gulf coast crowd is proposing for that

I've lived in Miami, where the Cuban food is great - a large colada of Cuban Coffee, a big plate of lechon asado (roast pork with lemon and onions) and platanos, yum!

I also lived in Detroit. Do they have anything unique to them? Dunno!

Yeah, Tracy, the place you're thinking of is Dairy King and they've expanded a lot! Can't really comment one way or another on their vanilla shakes. But it wouldn't surprise me to hear that their quality has declined. It's a real shame though.

I can't believe I posted about food in Breese and neglected to mention Wally's Drive-In (just across the street from Dairy King). Their hamburgers are legendary throughout Clinton County. And are another thing my kids insist on having when we're in Breese!

Tomato and mayonnaise (not Miracle Whip) sandwich and corn on the cob.

Only in the summer and the tomatos and corn must be from local garden or farmers!!

Boiled Peanuts (in the shell)

Buy them from street vendors in season or knock on anyone's door.

Wow, mostly, everything seems so exotic. Here in Kansas City (the heartland) Beef is King. Arthur Bryants Barbeque beef, although some people like Gates or Smokestack better - Not me! Then there's Winsteads burger, thin and fried and delicious. Last, steak at Plaza III. Lamars Donuts are hometown and pretty good and Christopher Elbow Chocolates are just amazing.

Chips at the Bridge
Fresh cut potatoes fried and served at chip truck under the Bluewater Bridge. Great with vinegar and ketchup.
Hundreds line up daily from May to September and then stroll the waterfront with their plate or cone.

Berkeley, California

It's foodie heaven here, with a special nod to fresh-from-the-field organic produce. Where to get it uncooked: Berkeley Bowl or the farmer's market on Saturday and Thursday. Where to get it prepared: Chez Panisse. Also, you can't miss the Cheeseboard cheese shop, and do stop next door and have a slice of Cheeseboard pizza - never the usual, always wonderful.

Greetings to fellow Gulf Coasters! I'm from New Orleans (and finally back in my house after Katrina).

As for food, where do I start? Charbroiled oysters are the best at Drago's in Fat City, praline bread pudding from Redfish Grill is awesome, and the Eggplant Vatican (with seafood, of course) from Venezia's is to die for!
