1 day in Tuscany

We will be renting a car in Siena in the morning and heading South. We plan to be in Rome that night by 8 pm.

What is the best plan for the day? What towns should you see and what route should we take?

Obvious question would be "why are you renting a car in Siena, rushing through some of the most beautiful countryside in Europe, and then driving INTO Rome????""

I would pick up the car in Siena, drive through the Val d'Orcia (see a past post of mine for a very detailed drive with "times" on it), visit Pienza, Montepulciano, Sant Antimo Abbey, then drop the car in Orvieto and take one of the hourly trains into Rome.

I absolutely agree with Stu. There is no way I would even consider driving in Rome. Definitely drop the car off and train into Rome from Orvieto or another town in the area.

Yep- make that three. Unless you want to go insane, don't drive into Rome. The Pienza-Montepulciano- then Orvieto scenario is the best one...
