1/2 day outside Rome

We're spending the night in Ostia Antica prior to a morning flight home from Rome. We were excited about the prospect of visiting the ruins there, then realized that we will be there on a Monday when the site is closed. We do not want to go into Rome, but is there anything interesting to see in that area in lieu of the Ostia Antica site? We will be driving down from Orvieto, with a photo stop at Pitigliano, if this helps.

If you have any interest in WWII you might want to visit Nettuno, where there is a large US cemetery, a medieval quarter on the sea, and a great seafood restaurant, Da Rodo. I did this as a day trip from Rome by train and thought it was a day well spent. In May, Sperlonga would probably be a great day trip.
I am interested in your stop at Pitigliano; I have never been there but have read a bit about it. I don't think it is on the normal tourist track and sounds like an interesting place to visit; I believe it once held a large Jewish population that did not survive the War.

Hi bobandbunkie,

I don't know if your time at Orvieto includes a 1/2 day visit to Civita di Bagnoreggio, but it's a very unique and charming little place. About a 25 minute drive from Orvieto. It's a place you see in coffe table books.

I spent a day in Pitigliano recently. It is a truly special town. The very old, lovingly restored synagogue, is a sight to be seen, and Elena Servi, the woman in the site that you sent, ekscrunchy, was actually there when we visited. It was quite amazing to see her after having read about her and the community. The town itself is perched high on a hill, built on tufa rocks, which in itself make it quite unique I think. Definitely a worthwhile day spend, great restaurant for lunch as well. You can read more on my latest trip report under my name.

It doesn't have the cultural interest of Pitigliano, but if I had a half-day to spend (more or less) near Ostia, I'd probably head for the hills, the Castelli Romani, have a great lunch somewhere and then just putter around:
