Terry

I have been on the Amsterdam. We did a Christmas cruise through the Panama Canal that started in Costa Rica and ended in Fort Lauderdale. She is a beautiful ship with a very warm, friendly and efficient staff. You'll love the ship. I have also cruised to Alaska in the summer time and was surprised at how cold it got. Be prepared for cold weather, 40's. You may also get a few warmer days but it's easier to remove a layer as we all know. Enjoy your cruise..

The weather in alaska in May is frequently a lot better than in August! There is less rain and more sunshine. Alaska is rarely warm, but you don't go there to be warm. Be warned however, that it is really cold if g you get close to the glaciers, so take fleece. It wouldn't hurt to pack a woolly hat and gloves, either. You'll be lots more comfortable out on deck sightseeing and looking for whales ans eagles! Have fun!

We took the first cruise of the year to Alaska, end of May first part of June and Had no rain in Ketchikan where they get 320 days a year of rain. Wear normal winter clothing, but take a few lighter things for the days when the sun is out--beautiful!Layer, layer, layer for the changes in the days.
Wear layers. We went May 21 in 1995
and 2000. Georgeous, in the high 60s and mid 70s both times, but no guarantee.

The cruises 2 days before ours hit clouds/rain/overcast the whole time.

Late May is early spring in Alaska. One of our favorite sayings in Alaska is that we have 2 seasons. 9 months of winter and 3 months of late spring.

Be prepared for rain. Southeast Alaska
is a temperate rain forest. Emphasis on
rain. My husband grew up in Juneau, and I swear, he has webbed feet.

Again, wear layers so you can shed as it gets warmer.

Enjoy!

Days,if sunny, should be in the 60s and 70s. If not sunny, the 50s. Nights cool off.

Bring lots of mosquito repellent. Probably won't need it in late May, but be prepared.

We were in Alaska last May - sunny everyday (except Ketchikan) but be prepared for rain as I heard this was not the norm. Nights dipped into the 30's-40's. We brought ski jackets, hats, and gloves which kept us warm enough to stay out on deck the day at Glacier Bay.

Thought of another tip.

I bought and wore "cuddle duds" and they were great. They are thin insulated underware and very warm. I've seen then at all leading department stores.

If it get too warm, they can easily be slipped off and stached in a back pack or purse.

This may be too late for your packing, but we were in Alaska last summer in early June on the Westerdam. I agree with what everyone said. I am so glad we bought really good ponchos before we left. When I say really good I mean long, heavy weight, hooded ponchos. It rained all day in Ketchikan. We wore our ponchos and had an excellent day! We saw people in those little thin throw away ponchos. They were soaked in an hour or so and returning to the ship. We had a great day. There is a little local bar on the wooden dock called Potlach. It is great for meeting the long time Alaska residents. You will love HAL. We have sailed with them three times.
