Walkie talkies do work on cruise ships - but please keep it to a minimum. We have been on so many cruises where people are constantly on them talking to kids, spouses etc. They are fine for emergencies but very very annoying. Cruises are for relaxation and to get away from the cell phone chatter that is so common in everyday life.

Oh, good! Thanks I am not a chatter on the phone. I need it to track my kid down while she is running around with older kids from our group. I though I am the first one who came up with the idea. I am glad I am not going to be viewed as a freak. Thanks

You are not a freak at all, you'll see lots of them on most ships. And yes, they can be a pain.

While it sounds like a great idea, what you'll find is a lot of "can you hear me now?" ... or "hey bobby...where ya at?" conversations almost none stop. This results in people just shutting them off and not using them.

Here's a few tips. Make sure they are the new "FRS" or Family Radio Service type. Don't worry, that's about all you can find anymore.

You can pick them up at any of the big chain stores like Wal-Mart, etc. The kind you'll use you can usually buy for $20-$30 a pair. If they are priced higher it's only because some have greater range, but even the cheapest ones should do fine.

Finally, try searching through the various frequencies on the ones you buy when your on the ship for one that doesn't have too much chatter or, set a time that you'll be listening, such as every hour on the hour if they are driving you nutty listening to the "noise".

Have fun and post any questions if you need more info.

We bought walkie-talkies and tried to use them on board, but we found them next to useless. Hard to hear, lots of static, etc.

Hi it is me OP with a different name
I am very greatfull for the info. I guess I can buy, try and if didn't work - return after the cruise BUT I am really do not want to wonder where my teenager is wondering and if she was followed by some creepes.
I am so worried!
We went on a smaller ship and she was within the reach and New Year cruising I belive will be kind of drunkier then normally so I am falling into pieces.
I should had though before BUT I did not know other kids in our party (older teens) are drinking already. Now I found out and freaking out!
Thanks for helping.

We have a set, which we sometimes use in lieu of using our regular cell phones when we are way out at sea with no coverage. Ours are motorola, and they have headpieces (handsfree) just like for a cellphone and they aren't annoying at all. No one can hear the conversations and it has the little built in mics like the handsfree things for cell phones.

Otherwise, without the earpieces and mouthpieces, I agree. They are obnoxious.

Regarding your concern about your young teen on the cruise - walkie talkies are not really going to solve tyour problem. Just because you can call her on the walkie talkie does not mean you know what she is doing and where. We have cruised with our teens several times - this is what works for us.

Your concern about her being followed by "creeps" - set a rule she is only allowed in public areas of the ship. That means she can not go into anyones cabin for any reason at any time, even the accompanying teens.

Instead of checking in with walkie talkie, make her check in in person with you at periodic intervals - your being able to see her will give you far more info than her voice.

No leaving the ship with anyone other than you.

Curfew at night and a shorter "leash". While during the day you might say "meet me at the pool in 4 hours", at night it might be something like "if you go anywhere other than the basketball court I want to know. Be back in cabin at midnight"

While your concern about older teens drinking, if she is in HS she has very likely been in situations where alcohol could be available. Set rules, pray, hope - and at least you know she will not be getting into a car with anyone who has been drinking.

Agree and not...
She is in 8th grade of JH so it is not like she has brains.LOL
No, I am kidding she was always very carefull even as a child. BUT those older teens are friend's kids and it is seems if I know them for years it is ok to do what they say to her. I am concern about peer pressure here. She does not give in to a peer pressure in school but ere - it is Mom's friend's kids, you know? They couldn't be bad. And I know it is a wrong assumption.
What I want is to know where she is to GO ang check on her.
Not just hear her voice. Physically go there. I just need walkie-talkie to be able to get her location to where should i go to see how they are. I am not planning on trysting point blank. Thanks

I'm just wondering where you think these kids are going to get drinks from or what kind of peer pressure you think will be there....the ship won't be serving them, so unless they are stealing alcohol from your room...

Keeping tabs is a great idea, and setting times to meet up and setting rules is definitely appropriate, but I think you can probably relax a little.
