Transportation in London

My wife and I have booked a cruise on rssc leaving from Dover on 8/5. We are arriving in London Sat. 8/3 and need to know if anyone can help answer a couple of transportation questions. First, is there a good/reliable transportation service that we should utilize going from Heathrow to Central London or should I just use a taxi from the airport? Also, we will need to be transported from our hotel on Monday 8/5 to Dover to catch our ship. What recommendations
would any of you have for this transport?
Thank you in advance for any help you might be able to provide.

Craig,

Sorry I can't really help with an answer but you may be better off posting your question to the Europe forum. Pretty bright bunch over there.

Have you thought about using the cruise transportation from the airport to the hotel and then they pick you up and take you to Dover.. Many people use private livery services...Frankly, I don't want the hassle of transferring luggage from airport to hotel and hotel to port.. myself..

Craig,
I took a Princess cruise out of Dover in June of 2000 to Iceland and points north. I suggest you use your cruise line transportation. It was a drive of 2-3 hours to get to Dover, depending on rush hour traffic. It was expensive $120.00 RT, but after seeing mileage and traffic involved, I was glad to let them do the driving and worrying about missing the ship, etc. They loaded our luggage on to a large truck at the airport and then we road in a comfortable bus escorted by Princess employees. The next time we saw our luggage was in our cabin. No hassle at all. Hope you have a great time.

Craig,
Also suggest using the ship transfers for most efficiency if available.
We are cruising to/from Southampton and staying in London a week after cruise, cruise line doesn't offer transfers on the return to anywhere but airport. I did find a very reasonable private car transfer by searching "transportation Southampton to London" and came up with several possibilities. You might also look at LondonTown.com and their transfer costs.

I have been to London six times or so. I have tried various methods of getting into central London from Heathrow and by far the easiest, though not the cheapest, is just to take a taxi. It will cost about 60 dollars, but given the ease of getting a cab, and going straight to your hotel, it's well worth it. In the old days, freelancers used to park by the exit and you could get a private car for cheap, but they've cracked down on them the last few years. Just spring for the cab.

Just a word of warning about taxi prices in London. The mayor has put up taxi charges by a significant amount and everyone here including taxi drivers is moaning about the price. As I do not take taxis very much I cannot give an exact figure...but it cost me over £20 to get to Waterloo from Hampstead recently and that is not an overly long journey.

I usually fly into Gatwick, but believe there is a semi-convenient bus between LHR and the hotels. AirLink or something like that? Something on the order of 4 or 5 pounds. It can probably be looked up on the London Transport Page. (It is: http://www.airlinks.co.uk/)

Craig - the best way to get from Heathrow to the city is the Heathrow Express train. Quick and not too expensive. Buy London Underground pass and you can travel around on tubes and buses at will. The trip to Dover can be made by train from Victoria Station. Don't forget our cross channel ferries go from Dover and many, many people take the train there. At the end of the day, if peace of mind is more important than cost then do as other posters have suggested and take the cruise line transfers.

I always forget about the train and bus service because, truthfully, I've always got way too much luggage with me. But both are viable options if you are traveling light -- I wouldn't want to be carting suitcases the size of the Titanic on the tube myself (yep, my poor husband).

We are cruising out of Harwich in Sept. I am using a car service for trip to central London from airport, then hotel to port. Their website is www.Airport-Transfers-uk.com. You might want to check them out.
Vicki
