Hi Sandi,

If you have sailed before only you can decide whether you like sea days or not. Did you find enough to keep you busy? You may or may not be bored depending on the ship and activities. Some ships have activities only geared to the elder crowd. Ask your travel agent for some sample activity sheets.

You would have better odds of hitting a large storm in a large ocean than what you would in say the Caribbean but the captain has a better chance of sailing around it.

Paul

When we've kicked around doing a transatlantic repositioning cruise, the negatives we come up with are:

1. The airfare is quite a bit more because of the two one-ways.

2. Since they happen in the late fall and early spring, the weather crossing the Atlantic will likely be quite a bit cooler than we'd like - on deck activities, etc.

3. Most are more than 7 days which eats up our vacation allowance faster.

Did a trans-atlantic in September..7 days from Harwich to Boston and really enjoyed the days at sea. The ship had an enclosed pool and jacuzzi, movie theatre and enough activities to keep us busy. Fortunately, our ship except for one day was able to weather the storm and although the ship rocked and rolled one night I never got seasick. Would I do another trans-atlantic again..absolutely..Some itineraries include a few ports on their way back...that might have been nice for 10 days and many people on our cruise had been on a Baltic cruise and continued right back home. Yes, the one way fare is a killer and if y ou have frequent flyer miles that would be the way to go. As to the ages of the passengers...there certainly were senior citizens, but also newly weds and those whose ages went from the thirties and a few teenagers.

We've done 4 transatlantic repositioning cruises, all in the spring (eastbound). We prefer spring because that's when we'd rather be in Europe (longer days, flowers, ...), and because that way you don't have to do the overnight flight.

The 3 May crossings have been balmy just about the whole time, but the April one (2002) was cooler and windy (but still pretty smooth).

If you come back before June 1st, you can usually find a decent 1-way airfare back. Our last couple have been around $320 - $340 from Frankfurt to Minneapolis.

Hi Sandi,

Have done one repositioning cruise - in late March/early April.

The weather was super (lucky us), but I assume it is catch-as-catch-can on most occasions.

There were a ton of things to do to keep busy, in fact we liked it better than the cruises that hit a port every day or two.

The one side benefit is that we bought roundtrip tickets back home from Europe . . . since we had the ticket we have taken advantage of the return flight. . . Of course, we need to buy another ticket to get back, and have bought round trip tickets.

We have now created a lifestyle of going to Europe every 4 to 6 months; which isn't soooo very bad.
