Ocho Rios activities for a pregnant lady
We just booked a cruise (our first!) on Holland America to the Western Carib in 4 weeks. I'll be 5 months pregnant at that time. I am up for snorkling and many other activities, but the most fun-looking activity in Ocho looks like Dunn's River Falls, which I can't do because of the risk of falling down.

Any suggestions on other activities for Ocho Rios? We definitely want to go ashore but would rather not book an excursion through the cruiseship. Thanks so much,
Kelly

Actually, the hike on the falls is easy and you would probably be fine since you're only 5 months along. Everyone holds hands so you won't fall down.

If you are 5 months pregnant - you are right that you shouldn't climb the falls. I saw many of people "fall" when the person they were holding on to let go!

You can go to the falls and "walk" up the stairs.

There is someone named "Peat Tayler" who has done private tours for people from cruises. Have not used him personally but know several who have.

I personally will stay on the ship next time I go to Ocho Rios. I didn't like the port.

Kelly, DO NOT listen to Capt. Bart!! You are correct in not climbing. You can always go back to climb Dunns River falls, but don't risk your baby to climb the falls. I climbed the falls and the area is beautiful, but the water is ice cold mountain water and the rocks are very slippery. I too have seen people fall 15-20 feet and seriously hurt themselves - even in the human hand holding chain, which is more of a hinderance than a help.

There are stairs along side the falls you can climb to see the falls. But don't waste your time or money snorkling in Jamaica - save that for Cozumel or Grand Caymen.
You may want to go to one of the Sandals or nearby hotel, pay a "day trippers" fee and have a nice relaxing day at the beach. Take it easy, with the added stress of pregnancy, the Caribbean heat and sun can pack quite a punch!

Wow. Thanks for all the feedback. I definitely won't be doing the falls. I do not want to put me or the baby at any risk. Besides, after doing a little more research, it seems like it might be too crowded anyway, so I don't mind missing it.

Has anyone been to any of the other attractions in Ocho Rios? Like the botanical gardens, fern grotto or the underwater caves?

Thanks so much for all your advice. I won't be climbing up waterfalls.

Kelly

I like botanical gardens, but as far as recommending the botanical gardens - only go if you are normally interested in botanical gardens - or if you just want to see pretty scenery. There are two in the Ocho Rios area - Shaw Park and Coyaba River Gardens. I think the one I have been to was Shaw Park. I went there years ago and it was a pretty little park with a few waterfalls and trails through lots of tropical foliage. There was even a tiny museum talking about Bob Marley and plantation life and slavery in 1700-1800's Jamaica. Bring insect repellent - being that it is lush and tropical, you don't want to be lunch for the mosquitoes. Also I went early in the morning to avoid the crowds from ship tours. Coyaba is also supposed to be nice, but I have not been there.

I really enjoyed Shaw park, but I love plants and gardens.

Have not been to the underwater caves but have been through Fern Gully. It is actually a section of highway with very tall ferns and a tropical rainforest. At the top of the drive is a stop where you can look out at the Blue Mountain range...but the view is partially blocked by people who will swarm you to buy things. Again, if you are the type of person who likes plants and trees and such, it is quite pretty. But it is nothing breathtaking.

Good luck with your decision and please post if you have any other questions.
