The Old Testament is even longer than this thread, so in a few words: crabs, lobsters, crawfish etc. are considered mean spirited because they have claws to harm other animals, and whoever eats them may become mean as well (not sure how shrimps got in the same company. May be someone else knows more). It is everybody's right to believe it or not, but at least it can serve as a possible explanation of some mean posts on this board. Faina, you are good the way you are so don't change anything. And who said you will steal, or smuggle, or conceal? You just take your food out - it is not a crime.

Well... this means I was wrong in saying that the Old Testament is the same as The Torah. It's obviously not, as I didn't see any "mean spirited" references to any prospective food.

Shrimp got in this company as only fish with fins and scales can be eated. This means, no eal. As for karp - oh, it's so good, the best gefilte fish.

WE NEED A FOOD FORUM!

There is a food forum -- it's in the Lounge/chit-chat room.

God how I hate those mean spirited lobsters - I say throw them all in boiling water until they turn red. That will teach them!!!

Both FainaAgain and Roswalt are correct about the explanation why seafood is not kosher.

Yes, Faina, now I remember I knew that story about shrimps and fins and scales, you reminded me.
Ziana, that was your guess but we are talking about the explanation Jewish religion provides for some seafood not being kosher. We'll call you to the podium when you deserve credit. No need to type in caps.

I love seafood, all kinds, fins or shells.

What they eat is not relevant to me personally.

Thanks for the explanation of fish vs seafood as I did not recognize the religious implication.

According to a web site I found about the rules for kosher foods:

"To be kosher, a fish must have both fins and scales. The lack of either characteristic renders that species of fish unclean. Examples of unkosher fish include shark, catfish and eels. All shellfish, such as crabs, lobster, and shrimp are not kosher. All sea mammals, such as dolphins, whales and seals are not kosher. All other sea animals, such as octopus, squid and jellyfish are also not kosher.

Seaweed and other sea plant life are all kosher."

I find it odd that catfish are not kosher but carp are ... no fish eats more crap and garbage than a carp!

NO way! My father-in-law lives there.
Next time he is visiting i will ask him to fly in with pike. Do you think they will let him bring a fish in checked luggage? Should i start a new thread 'Can I carry Pike in check-in luggage?'

Ziana, daaahling, you're too late with this question. Believe it or not, it's been discussed!

Yes, you can check in fish packed with ice into something special - they do it at the market.

It's scary how much info from this website my memory can hold

I thought the fish had to fit in a quart size zip lock baggie that is carried in your carry-n bag! I wonder if the fish has to be 3 ounces or less also?

Looks like quite a few of us have nothing much to do today; and are we doing it on company time. Who really cares...they waste so much food on cruise ships...guess why the fish are followng us, and no one cares if you smuggle it off. But why would you want to do that????Lets change the subject.
