We returned on Monday from a 14-day Alaska cruise, and I finally found enough courage to get on the scale this morning. I didn't gain weight!

I did an hour on the treadmill in the gym each morning, walked 12 to 24K steps (used a pedometer) several days, followed ParrotMom's plan and ate smoked salmon as many times as I could get my hands on it (yum), and drank unsweetened iced tea instead of juice or soft drinks. I also ate at least a zillion bread sticks, two desserts at each meal, a warm almond croissant on several mornings, and a five-course dinner each night during the two weeks.

FYI one 12 oz. can of regular soda has about 15 tsps. of sugar.

1) eat lots of delicious fresh fruits and vegetables - take a break from fried foods

2) make it two meals a day - either a substantial breakfast and early dinner or skip breakfast and have lunch and dinner

3) stay out of the buffet - the food is better and you have better portion control at the served dining rooms

4) the booze is pricy --- drink slowly

5) I'm too old to job and don't go to the gym either, but there is plenty of opportunity for leisurely walking around the promenade deck of the ship, not to mention taking the stairs instead of the elevator, at least some of the time

Most days we order a light breakfast in the cabin and enjoy it on the veranda.

My downfall is the lunch grill by the pool. By the end of the cruise I am going back for second grilled ham and cheese or a burger.

Our secret has always been to walk. No elevator and walk as much as you can on shore.

Most trips we at least do not gain and a few times have lost.

Returned from the cruise on Oceana and tipped the scales at 13st 10lbs so I have put on 10 pounds in weight.

I did use the stairs a lot, the lifts were very slow. I also went to the gym twice and did 4 miles on the treadmill plus walked a lot when ashore. Had some lovely walks around Santiago de Compostela, Cascais, Estoril, Sintra, Funchal and Santa Cruz de la Palma.

Managed to cut out cookies and danish pastries and although I enjoyed 3 hearty meals a day I only lapsed twice with mid afternoon snacks.

My achilles heel were several bottles a night of English "Old Speckled Hen" beer.

Diet has started today in earnest. Need to lose 20 pounds between now and September for my next jaunt to the Algarve.

Actually that may not be as bad as it seems. Cruise food is higher in sodium that what you are probably used to so at some of that is H2O. To gain 10 lbs. in 14 days means basically eating double what you are used to as it comes to about 2500 cal/day in excess of need. Thats alot, esp. with the exercixe you got in. Good luck. Larry

On our last cruise I put on five pounds.. it was the smoked salmon at breakfast ..In the end the portions are smaller now..for lunch if we ate at the buffet (whle at sea).. salads and desserts..lol. We aent that active at our age and we walked everywhere except up and down stairs because of Parrot Pops ankle.. Oh yes.. we stayed away from all those frou frou drinks.. ..often no more than two drinks a day.. No midnight or chocolate buffets.. too tempting.. ENJOY MY FRIENDS.. LIFE IS TOO SHORT..
