NCL only charges for Hagen Daz ice cream. They have a push cart stand that has frozen HD bars for a couple or three dollars. Each afternoon they have free ice cream available for anyone. They usually have three or four flavors and toppings. Very nice. We ate one of the HD because it was double chocolate and sounded real rich. So-so! The free ice cream has always been enough for us. Just got off the Star a week ago. Liz

Has anyone ever had to use the medical services on board a cruise ship? I was sitting beside a woman waiting for the after dinner show to star. She began to tell me how shocked she had been at the cost of the doctor's consult but the show began and I never heard the rest of the story. Now I'm afraid to depend on that medical service whice I once found so comforting.

Medical attention on a cruise ship is like medical attention anywhere - it costs something! On a recent NCL cruise there was a rate schedule posted on door of clinic - listing different fees for RN consultation during clinic hours, during off-clinic hours, MD visit, etc.
And many US insurance policies cover cruise MD visit in same fashion they do with land-based care - copayments, deductibles, etc. One difference is you would likely have to pay up-front and deal with insurance company later. But that would be likely the case in a foreign country as well.
While I can agree that some of the add-on charges on cruises are annoying, I do not agree that a medical visit is in that category.
