Drinks on the Ship
Have heard alot of stories on getting a large bill at the end of a cruise for drinks. This is a first cruise and want to be prepared. Going on HAL in Alaska, does anyone know the approx. cost of beer and whiskey on board the ship. Not really into exotic drinks.
Thanks

The prices quoted by others so far are accurate.
From what I've seen over the years, those "big bill" stories are usually related to folks who have partied a little too much and lost track of how often/or how much they charged to their accounts.
I've also see this happen when guests want to "treat" their friends to a round of drinks. If you buy 5 or 6 drinks at a time it can really add up.
Most lines deliver a "progress" bill to your cabin during the week so you can see what you've charged up to that point.
You should look at your charges and save the receipts they give you with each purchase (including drinks) as I have gotten charged for someone elses drinks when a busy waiter writes down the wrong account number, etc...but it's rare.
Anyway, I wouldn't be too concerned. Those big bill stories are by far the exception, not the rule.

The cost of drinking onboard can get expensive. Even if you "coast." Say you have 2 drinks at "happy hour" 2 at the show and then maybe a "nightcap" in one of the clubs. With a partner that comes to 10 drinks multiplied by 7 nights is 70 drinks. At an average cost of $4.50 a drink your bill will be around $315.00, That was while "coasting." You can do the math for "steaming."

mplanner, the cost of drinks are consistent with what you would pay if you were staying at a resort. If you are a wine drinker that likes wine with dinner you often can get a package, pay for 4 bottles and get 1 free. Many people lose track of what they are spending because they don't see their "sail & sign" card as they would if they were using an actual credit card or cash to buy drinks. Watch out for the "fancy" drinks in novelty plastic cups, they can go for $10+ and will run up your bill quickly. The real horror stories are from the weekend "booze" cruises where people are on the ship just to party and don't realize those low cabin fares are to entice people that will spend a lot of money drinking while on the ship.
