more info
Officials don't know yet how Mankamyer went overboard or how he survived without a flotation device in the choppy waters, where temperatures had dipped into the lower 70s.

But his 300-pound girth might have helped. As a heavyset man, he was more likely to float than someone leaner, said Richard Rotundo, a professor at the University of Miami's Miller School of Medicine specializing in cell biology and anatomy.

I wonder why these incidents seem to be increasing in frequency.

I think that maybe the cruiselines should start to cut people off who have had too much to drink. Then if they want to drink or use drugs in their own cabins, they do so at their own risk.

It's like shark attacks, I don't think the incidents are increasing, but the REPORTS are increasing. Just last week the Cruise Line industry just agreed to report crimes/situations to proper authorities; police, FBI etc....Up to now they were not required to..scary huh..

Of course the number of incidents is increasing, as millions more people cruise every year, and especially young people who fall overboard after getting drunk or playing dumb jokes. It was nearly impossible some 20 years ago when cruising was a privilege of mostly seniors.
