Cruising to Kusadasi
We are arriving in Kusadasi by cruise ship in late April. This is our first time in Italy, and we are only there for a day. What would you suggest we do to most economically spend our time without missing 'must see' highlights?

Enjoy your time in Kusadasi. The town has grown a lot since the days when I visited, and if I were to go back, I probably would not spend too much time in town, opting to spend it seeing the nearby sights.
Tour to Ephesus is a must. If I were you, I'd do it with a private guide and go as early in the day as possible. Other than that, Virgin Mary's House is not too far away and can be easily combined. There is a small archeological museum in nearby Selcuk that would be worth visiting. Also, the Basilica of St John and Isa Bey Mosque. I don't know if the citadel can be visited.
I think you still go through Selcuk en route to Virgin Mary's House so it's all doable - long, perhaps tiring day, but very rewarding. That said, I could spend the entire day exploring Ephesus alone, so what you do and how much you do really will depend on how in-depth you want your various stops to be.
In town, there is Pigeon Island and of course what a lot of people do, spend the day shopping (not my cup of tea).
Google search brought up: http://www.kusadasi.net/ - good starting point to see what's in and around the area.

It is in Turkey and I wonder if you will really like it as a vacation destination. I found it overbuilt and kind of ugly. I wondered why there was so many houses that were only partially built. It appeared that there was no zoning or growth controls in the area.
There are some nice ruins nearby but not much to see in town.

I agree with eenusa that a tour to Ephesus is a must! It was my husband's favorite stop because of the history. We did a 5 hour private tour that included Virgin Mary's house, Basilica of St. John. Check out www.ekoltravel.com Very reasonable prices

You absolutely must see the ruins of Ephesus if it's the only thing you do! It's huge and amazing, especially the library facade. Be sure it's a guided tour and prepare to do alot of (slow) walking. Virgin Mary's House/Basilica of St.John +/- only if time permits.
