Thanks for your timely reply. My reason for asking is because I'm going to attempt a non stop flight Chicago to Zurich if at all possible - using miles - call me crazy. Then the one hour train shuttle to Basel which leaves from the Zurich airport. The thought of having to change planes and all that involves tires me out just thinking about it. The train transfer sounds easier for me.

Now that I need wheelchair assistance to avoid stairs and long walks, it is a far from a convenient process time wise. Sometimes between flights I get plopped down in the handicap area and have to wait an hour or more before before I get shunted to the next terminal/gate which necessitates planning for ample time between connecting flights.

The cruise I'm looking at is 13 days with Tauck from Basel to Amsterdam, Spring 2017. I plan to go in a day early and take advantage of Tauck's offer of a gratis hotel night, then do a tour of Lucerne before embarkation. Tauck also provides transport on arrival and departure.

Again, I appreciate your input.

A dlight transfer would probably be easier than boarding the train with luggage, stowing the luggage and getting it off the train, etc.

You are welcome Travelchat. Hope you will post your trip report when you return. I'd like to hear about Tauck.

TR will be posted but in July due to the Spring cruise all booked at the single cabin level. Argh. I had been putting off calling until annual medical test results came in.
But the summer cruise will be fine as long as the temps aren't above mid 70's.
