Yes,in July, August and 1st part Sept. They also have these very smallllll flys. They bite and will hurt for 3 or 4 days. Take deet with you. I talked to one lady that lives there, and she was the one telling me about the flys. They can even leave scars. But as long as you use common sense and good repellant you should have no problem. We went the end of May, to avoid the problem.
Hi Michelle,

I have been to Alaska four times. Three times in July and August and have never been bit by a mosquito although the natives brag about them.

Of course I have never walked around at night in the wilderness nor have I ever been on a fishing trip.

Paul

There are relatively few mosquitoes that manage to get out on salt water far enough to bother cruise passengers, although they can obviously make it when the boat is tied up in port. But mostly in Southeast Alaska bugs are not that big an issue except in the same places you'd expect them in the lower 48, like lakes and ponds, riverbanks, the usual. Farther north and inland, they can be bothersome, seriously so in the interior and on the tundra, but most cruise tourists don't get that far into the state. I expect the flies referred to are what we can no-see-ums, which can be a major pain, but are far less prevalent than mosquitoes. In most parts of the state the bugs start thinning out later in the summer, around August or so.

If you are from the east, south, or midwest and you're limiting your visit to Southeast, you probably won't encounter bugs in Alaska which are worse than those available in your back yard. Deet works fine for most people.
