Yes, David, why don't you consult Lonely Planet for some destination advice as I think it's just your speed!!

I'm sorry David, but have you actually ever BEEN to Bermuda? How can you say there are no decent beaches? Are you kidding? I've been to 4 Hawaiian islands, Mexico, all over the caribbean, the Bahamas and even to Phuket Thailand, and the beaches in Bermuda are my favorite. That gorgeous, gorgeous pink sand and aqua water, not to mention the amazing rock formations.

I have to know where David thinks the beaches are better. I'll make a reservation there immediately.

I've been to Bermuda four times and the beaches are better than anywhere I've been in the Caribbean except maybe Virgin Gorda. But Bermuda is not a Caribbean Island, for better and worse. The island is beautiful but you can't count of very warm weather all year. Some restaurants are good but they're limited in number. Transportation can be tricky. It all depends what you're looking for.

In mid-October I found Bermuda to be an absolutely beautiful island with such a clean environment. The beaches were breathtaking with pink sand and pristine waters. I was also impressed with how good the restaurants were (and I'm very picky when it comes to dining out).

With scooters as our mode of transportation, we had so much fun driving all over the island and exploring the beautiful Bermuda scenery with its colorful pastel houses, lush vegetation, and quaint shops and restaurants.

I don't remember seeing anything that looked "commercial" at all. I try to avoid places like that.

As for the climate, we enjoyed hours of beach time everyday, swimming and snorkling, and I came home with a pretty good tan.

Finally, the Bermuda locals were the friendliest people I've met. We found these folks to be so easy to talk to and extremely courteous. I think that's the British influence.

Sorry so long-winded, but I just love talking about my trip to Bermuda.

Just a note to the person who compared Bermuda to North Carolina. The water in North Caroline in summer, in or near the Wrightsville beach area (probably the prettiest Atlantic beach in the US or certainly in the top 3) is extremely warm, in the 90s........and the climate is subtropical so it is almost always pleasant.....
I'll be going to Bermuda for the first time in June and really look forward to it. I've always tended to overlook Bermuda in favor of the Caribbean or South Florida, and I think lots of other people do too for a variety of reasons: it's perceived as being expensive and "snooty", with North Carolina weather. I'm expecting a little of the first two (and that's o.k.) but think the weather will be great and the beaches beautiful. I'm thrilled that there's a good bus system to take this first-timer around a few times before getting up the nerve to rent a scooter. For me the burning question is which I'll like better, the rum swizzle or the dark & stormy.

Al, I prefer a dark and stormy. Ahhh, I can close my eyes and taste one and almost see those beautiful beaches and aqua water now. I'm sooooo jealous!

Al, also, RENT THE SCOOTER! It's a blast. My husband and I are in our 40's and plan on renting scooters in Bermuda until we're using walkers. We were there last in October. It's great fun. Give it a try, you won't regret it!

Nina, no worries, we'll definitely be renting scooters! Are you familiar with a company called Oleander or something like that? Our package came with a 10% off voucher from them and I'll probably use them unless I'm told otherwise.

A drink called Dark & Stormy has to be great, doesn't it?

Ever have a Goombay Smash?

Al, Yes, Oleander cycles, big cycle rental place in Bermuda with a few outlets.

I'm also familier with Goombay smashes. I had one last on Nantucket last year at the Rose and Crown. Don't you love those island drinks? What is it about beaches, warm breezes and rum that go so well together!

I have been to Bermuda. Gorgeous, clean
and the people are so polite. Buttttt,
I just got married on Trunk Bay and
honeymooned in St. John, USVI. This
is purely paradise. I think the
beaches beat out Bermuda. Bermuda
has it's Horseshoe Bay, St. John has
39 Horseshoe Bays. Stunning beaches.

The island is 2/3 National Park, so
it is so clean and lush. The views
are to die for.

St. John is clean, nice people and
what is better than Bermuda is
that St. John has fabulous villas for every price range to rent. There is something for everyone on St. John

St. John gets my vote.

Nanc

1. Go when it's warm.
2. Who wants to drive a car? A scooter is much more fun.
3. Yeah but it's worth it.

I loved Bermuda. We did not rent scooters (too noisy, too touristy). We rented bicycles and rode on the railroad bed. We bought a pass and went on the buses and ferries where we met the most polite culture we have ever observed. We did not wait at a bus stop for more than 10 minutes.

The beaches were gorgeous. The golf was great. The Bermudian food ("pub fare") was a little scary--we had some great non-anglo meals though.

We went in the first two weeks of June and the weather and water was perfect. I believe Bermuda is more Anglo or New England-ish than Caribbean. It is not a "LOOSE" kind of place.

Sorry, but in my opinion, St. John is still too slummy and primitive compared to cultured and beautiful Bermuda!!

Mary, scooters are "touristy"? Tell that to all the residents who ALL own and ride them daily! My neighbor grew up in Tuckers Town in Bermuda. Everyone she knew, including everyone in her family, rode a scooter.
