Hi,
A group of friends (all couples), are planning on travelling to the caribbean towards the end of feb. We would like to stay at one island and do some outdoor adventures, sight see, hang out and just have fun. We need suggestions on which island would be a good idea for this (and less populated with spring break crowd) - Bahamas, Dominican Republic or Jamaica.

You may encounter some spring breakers on any of the islands. Jamaica is still the one I would choose. Lots of hotels to choose from. The island is very lush, good beaches, good food, just a fun island. We really thought we had found paradise when we were there.

You're very unlikely to encounter any Spring breakers in late February. That's still the most expensive part of the high season. I'd certainly skip the Bahamas if you want outdoor adventures---unless you want to do only diving. Those islands aren't so interesting and can be pretty chilly in February. The problem with the D.R., is that most resort areas (except for the north coast) are pretty isolated, particularly Punta Cana. Jamaica does seem like the best of the three. But you're being especially vague about what you are looking for, but from your initial suggestions, it seems that you are looking for an island that's pretty much on the beaten path, which isn't a bad thing. For what you describe, I'd actually recommend Puerto Rico, just outside of San Juan.

I have heard that in Jamaica you have to be real careful - it's not safe to wander far away from the area you are living in. Is that true?

Another island you might consider is St. Kitts.

Outdoor activities such as golfing, snorkeling, kayaking, fishing, hiking the rainforest and volcano, liming with the friendly locals at the many fun beach bars, catamaran to sister island of Nevis.

We went to Negril, Jamaica in July and loved it. Beach is that beautiful clear blue water that you can see the bottom. You can float on your raft and not be tossed around, the beach is very calm. Lots of funky restaurants and bars. Food is relatively cheap. There is usually some kind of entertainment going on each night at the beach "clubs". Very casual. You can walk for miles on the beach. We walked around all the time and never felt unsafe. There are a few characters at night that will try to put a bracelet on you and ask for money, but not too bad. CoCoLaPalm was recommended to us and we loved it. Not 5 star but more than adequate for us. Located right in the middle of Negril Beach and walking distance to many restaurants and small bars. Idle Awile next door is also highly recommended but they don't have a pool or hot tub. Not that you need a pool at all, but we enjoyed the hot tub at CoCoLaPalm. We just went there to relax and didn't do any excursions, but there are plenty available. They now have the zip lines too near Montego bay.

I won't comment on the particular islands (haven't been to DR or Jamaica) but would tell you that prices (at least airfare) will be very high during President's week. So if you don't like the fare you see, see if moving it a bit will help.
