The Hawaiian islands are each quite different from one another (much like those of the Caribbean).
Which island, or what type of "Hawaiian experience", or you looking for?
Are you looking for lush green scenery?
Beaches the main factor?
What about civilization....do you want isolation or access to commerce?
Secluded and rustic or luxury resort?
When you say expensive do you mean because of the airfare? Packages can lower the cost--we stayed in the Big Island of Hawaii at the "Keauhou Beach Resort" in Kona which was not expensive and very nice (you will need a rental car)--it is now owned I believe by Ohana or something like that--you can probably still get info under the old name using Google.

Dominica is arguably the most beautiful island, and its lush tropical atmosphere reminded me of Kauai. With one big exception...Dominica is one of the worst islands for beaches. There are a number of islands that combine beaches with mountains and lush tropical rainforest, such as Martinique, Guadeloupe, St. Lucia and St. Kitts.
