Where to stay?

My girlfriend and I are going to Grenada for 8 nights the last week in August and we are currently trying to decide on a place to stay. So far, the Gem Holiday Beach resort looks the most appealing. Has anyone stayed there or have any comments good or bad about the place? Or, can someone recommend something nice for two people that is close to the beach preferably with a kitchenette with a lodging budget of $550 or less.

We stayed at the Gem two years ago for two nights. We thought it was a very good value. The rooms are spacious and clean, balconey, kitchenette (that we only used for keeping beer and water cold along with opening the occasional bottle of wine). Our room had twin beds (OK with us, we just got off a two week Windjammer cruise so anything bigger than a bunk looked great!). TV didn't work but we weren't there to watch TV. It's not 'on' the beach but worth it because Morne Rouge Bay is lovely. It's a walk across the parking lot, past the disco (didn't appear to be open while we were there except Saturday night and then it never bothered us) and through the beach bar/restaurant to Morne Rouge. The food was good at the restaurant and very reasonably priced. We're trying the Mariposa this year. It's just up the hill from the Gem and has a fabulous view of Morne Rouge. The rates were comparable but I'm not sure if they have kitchenettes. They do have a pool perched right on the cliff at Morne Rouge. Don't forget to book a tour with Mandoo at www.grenadatours.com. He's the best! Enjoy your stay in Grenada.
