Where to go for 4 or 5 nights after Christmas?
Just decided to use up some vacation time and talked a friend into going some place warm (from Boston). We like good food (either casual or upscale) and some nightlife. Two straight women that would like to walk from hotel to dinner or a bar for drink/music after dinner - we're too old for clubs. Where should we go? Should we book hotel/air packages online or from travel agent? Do you think any last minute deals given current economy? Thanks in advance.

Prefer other places besides Mexico. I'm not sure on the all-inclusive, as I've never been on one of those vacations. I would say yes to all-inclusive if there is good (non-buffet) dinners - it doesn't have to be fine dining just good food. From what I'm seeing online, high season starts @ Dec 20th so am guessing peak season with peak prices. Thanks for any suggestions!

Grand Cayman would be great for you, except for the cost. It is an incredibly safe, close island that is beautiful. The problem is their dollar is worth more than ours, so it can be pricey!
You might want to consider Freeport Bahamas too. That is also close and would be cheaper.

I wouldn't recommend the Bahamas right after Christmas. The weather can be quite cool at that time of year.
A better bet would be farther south to either Cayman, Puerto Rico, or Jamaica. I'm not sure if there are nonstops to Cayman from Boston, but pretty sure there are nonstops to both Puerto Rico and Jamaica, either of which is just under four hours from the east coast.
As for AL resorts, I am not a big fan. We've had some terrible food at some of the big named resorts, and you miss out on the opportunity to meet locals and experience the real cuisine of the place you're visiting.

I highly recommend Barcelo Maya Palace or the Iberostar Pairiso Lindo in the Riviera Maya. They are all-inclusive so the food is a little iffy, but the ambience during the holidays is very nice. These resorts are huge and have a lot of beautiful walkways and bars to frequent after dinner. They also have shows which are kind of corny, but you can go have a glass of champagne, watch at bit, laugh a little, and then leave. We have been going to these resorts for years with our daughters. The girls and I get up and run before sunrise and I have never felt threatened or unsafe. Mexicans are such warm, friendly people. There are also some fun day trips to take by taxi.
We also have been to over 20 islands and there are many beautiful and fun places such as St. John. The Rock House on the cliffs of Negril Jamaica would be my next choice. Very different and gorgeous!
