Where should we stay - on which BVI
My husband and I are flying into St. Thomas next week. From all I've read I'm scared to stay there. We are looking for beautiful beaches, preferably deserted, some good snorkling, nice restaurants and maybe a club to dance in at night. I don't know much about the BVI. We don't want a very long ferry ride. What would be a nice hotel to stay in. We would prefer one that has kitchen facilities. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Andrea, by all means, I recommend you do a search at this Forum on Frenchman's Cay. It's price is midrange, it offers coziness and romance. You have your own small, separate villa of maybe 700-800 sq ft., a SMASHING view from your own covered porch, and the packages are wonderful. You have a full kitchen so that you are free to take light meals in your villa, and there is a nearby provisioner that sells homemade frozen dishes that are primo. The management are wonderful. The beach is, oh, about 200 ft long with a breakwater to stop the wave action.
As to the island of Tortola, BVI... it is a very laid-back, low key sort of place. Nothing taller than 3 stories, but actually most everything is one or two stories. The gov't limits growth so that you have no crowded beaches or highways and you can fully expect to have no more than a half dozen folks on the beach.
As opposed to the crush and crime of St. Thomas (I've experienced that first-hand), the BVI is very friendly. Every one is so courteous in that English sort of way. It is enough for me to go over to St. Thomas once for a half day of shopping. Very nice ferry ride.
You will want a car and FC offers packages, I believe, with cars included. Last time I calculated, you were much better off with the packages than to do meals and car on your own.
Another person has recommended Ft. Recovery. I have been there, also. It is quite charming as well. Takes somewhat more guests. View not as good. Beach a bit better. Serve meals in your room as the standard thing. About half their rooms are literally on the beach, which might be an attraction. Not much view. I would prefer Frenchman's
All in all, Andrea, BVI is a quiet place, quite romantic, sort of a Jimmy Buffet kind of place; in fact, one of his songs is about Cane Garden Bay which is here on Tortola.
No crime. I have felt so safe here, that one time I picked up a hitchhiker. Yes, I know, but I did! We had a wonderful chat. I met his family and stayed for a dinner of a local dish called rotie. Charming people. They did have a murder last year, but guess what? It was an American who killed another American. You can dance at night. Quito's is a big porch over on Cane Garden Bay. He plays solo and with a band. Mostly acoustic. Very nice. Very tropical.
To sum it up, if you want marble floors and liveried bellboys and such, go to St. Thomas or St. John and lock your door. If you want simple, clean, breezy toned down with help that tend to treat you like another person rather than "whitey", try the BVI.
By all means write if I can respond to any question.

I hate to disagree but I think it is time for some honesty here too! I love the BVI's, don't get me wrong, and while better than a lot of places, there has been a "crime wave" (THEIR words not mine) there too! Check http://www.islandsun.com/2000-may/11...al1-v4i04.html which is the BVI newspaper on the web. It will give you a better picture of the "crime" situation in the BVI. Regardless, the crime issue should be a NON-issue in both the BVI or the USVI as neither will greatly affect the visitor who is cautious. The risk is still much less than many places!!! You will find the marble floors at the Ritz on STT and that is about it (but maybe the Marriott added some in the redo) and as far as the "bell PERSONS," hopefully most resorts do have someone to assist with the checking in/out and with the luggage!
