What is going on with Compass Point
Does anyone know what is going on with Compass Point? The re-opening date keeps getting pushed out.
I was hoping to get married there in May 2006. I thought it would be fun to take over the whole resort.
Does anyone have any other ideas-a place with the same feel. I have been researching moon dance villas-but of course this would be quite a bit more expensive.
Any thoughts are greatly appreciated!

Compass Point is closed indefinitely. The management will not tell anyone anything. They say it was closed to due hurricane damage but the owners have found that they cannot run both the high end Kamalame Cay and Compass Point. So, Compass Point is up for sale. Compass Point was special and affordable. I find the other Island Outpost hotels out of my price range but you might want to check out the Caves in Negril if you want that small sophisticated feel.

Yes I was told Compass Point was for sale-I thought they had a buyer. What a great place! I am going to the Caves over New Years-so I can check it out. The problem is it only has 10 rooms and does not allow children-I think I will have two at my wedding. It is also all-inclusive. I am looking to host a casual dinner the first night,- ceremony, cocktails, dinner and music the second night followed by brunch the last day. I do not want my guest to pay all-inclusive rates/maybe I can negotiate a different deal. Has anybody done this?

If you are looking at the Bahamas, look into Harbour Island. You can get direct flights into Nassau and take the Fast Ferry over or the Bahamas Air flights.
Also there are direct flights into N. Eleuthera out of Florida that are about 50 minutes.
There are several nice places to stay in several different price ranges, and since May is off season the pricing would be even better. There are also several restaurants on island that would be perfect for your dinners and brunch and regularly do large dinner parties.
THere are several places on island for weddings, including a lovely gazebo, some beautiful old (think late 1700's)
and of course you could be married right on the beach.
Harbour Island is one of the top destinations now in the world, and has the most beautiful 3 mile beach.
There is also a wedding planner on island now that can take care of everything for you. I did a wedding there a few years ago, and we had to do was show up, everything else was taken care of, and the reception was lovely.
If you go to the www.briland.com site and click on "Briland Modem" it will take you to the message board, and you can get the email address and phone number of the wedding planners.
Hope this helps a bit, have a wonderful time.

Thanks for the info. We have been to Harbour Island twice and have stayed at Pink Sands. We love the island-but I think Pink Sands would be a bit $$ for a wedding. Any ideas on where a "semi-small" group could stay?

I actually had my wedding at Pink Sands in May of 2004. I will have to say it was not that expensive. We had about 60 people attend. I had most of the wedding party stay at the Pinks Sands but others, who could not afford it stayed at Coral Sands. Overall it was a huge success. The wedding was on the beach, the early reception was at the Blue Bar and then we went to the Main House for dinner and dancing. The neat part of the whole thing was that it was almost like everyone on the island was involved and was giving congratulations during our entire stay.

My husband and I just booked our "babymoon" at Compass Point. I got a little worried though when I discovered the resort has been omitted from the 2007 Fodor's (and Frommer's) Bahamas guidebooks.
I contacted Linda Scully at Compass Point who responded that the resort had been closed for major renovations and is currently under ownership of Island Outpost. She said that they plan to open the hotel November 15, 2006 and the restaurant December 1, 2006. She said the resort should be fully operational by the time we arrive in January 2007.
My question to those out there is if you think we should keep our reservation or not. My feeling is the service could be phenomenally great or bad depending on how long it takes to get operations runnning smoothly again. I don't really feel like being a guinea pig especially since this will be me and my husband's last truly childless vacation.
Anyone experienced with Island Outpost resorts? Opinions wanted and welcomed.
Thanks!

Yikes, tamasyl. There is a very good chance the opening will be further delayed... Island Outpost is not even accepting winter reservations online, if that tells you anything.
The key question is: what are you paying? Are you paying full rack rate in January? If so, I think you might want to negotiate with the manamegent on a discounted room rate, since you all will be "guinea pigs".
Personally I would just cancel outright. This does not look good.

If your looking for a boutique style romantic location, take a look at Kamalame Cay. It's a little pricey, but January prices are affordable.
(and include food, wine, alcohol)
www.kamalame.com
It's located on Andros (an outisland) but worth the effort to get there.

My family has been to Compass Point 3 times. They were are most memorable vacations. We enjoyed the intimacy, scenery, and of course the interesting people we met there, including Sean Connery and Al Roker.
We are very pleased to see that it has reopened as an Island Outpost property and hope it is like we remember it!

Don't worry and be very happy!
Compass Point is opening bit by bit: the Scully's made it !
I attended the second wedding held there at Nov. 25th 2006 and the place looks stunning again. Food was great and the staff wonderfull. Most people of the wedding party also had their cabin there. Been there several times before and I'm so pleased it was 'saved'. Open for cocktails on several evenings, Bahamian Filmfestival lodgings last week: bussiness is returning
Wishing the Scully's and their staff all the best.

Just came back from Nassau and had a great lunch at the restaurant. The hotel looks amazing!! It is even more vibrant than it was before. The managers, the Skullys seem very nice and the staff were great. Next time, I will stay there!
