You are so right he does not throw crumbs for his blessings are many. I think Jim has a sense of guilt towards the situation or else he is fearful he will have to pay it someday and is trying to find out. One or the other. If he never has to pay it, and he is a good person, then he should take the money, and use it wisely for some other purpose. Charity, or for children that are deprived, or a family whose home burned down, doesn't have insurance or just whatever. Sure you catch the drift. The holidays are approaching and it is a good time for good works. Just my thoughts.

Thanks for all your replies. Maybe I am feeling some guilt or anxiety about this. I really liked the post that some rich admirer paid the bill. My wife should get a kick out that -- I think she was 5 or 6 months pregnant at the time!

I think I'll try to give a little extra to the needy this year and chalk this one up as one of those things that just happens.

Hi Jim-Glad to hear from you and that you are real enough to admit the honest issue. We all have to be accountable for our own actions and decisions. It is difficult to be honest when so many times we are taken advantage of, in other situations. Hope you do what is right in your own heart. Best wishes and happy traveling.

Jim, Instead of donating more to charity this year, why don't you just call the hotel and make them aware of their mistake......sounds like that might clear the conscience...

Jim, glad to hear from you. Somewhere in your heart you want to do what is right. These hotels make loads of money, they are not poor in any way. Do what you feel is right in your own heart, all we do in life we at some point in time will be accountable for our actions. (So I believe.) Happy travels, best of luck.

Jim,

My husband and I have had many discussions about this. I know you're talking San Juan or Mexico but the level of service in America is attrocious and the reliability and accountability of workers today leaves a lot to be desired. No matter where one turns service received is generally shi***!

It's not as if you ran out on the bill, "dined and dashed", so to speak. You presented your credit card for payment. I don't believe it's your responsibility to make sure the hotel assumes it's presumed responsibility of collecting on the debt.

Take another trip and enjoy yourselves!!

I never heard such a bunch of crap in my life!! To all those with the holier than thou attitudes: get real!! These resorts make millions, and you think they miss one guests payment? Again get real!!

Jim, I would be so psyched if they screwed up and didn't charge me, I'd imediately book next years vacation with the money!! Sorry, but sometimes it's survival of the fittest, and yoiu need to take what you get. If Jim was lucky enough to get a freebie, than celebrate, and high five your buddies!!

Jim wasn't dishonest, and has NO responsibility to "do the right thing". The hotel screwed up, and he gets to benefit from it...end of story!! For those who are trying to bring guilt upon Jim for being dishonest...get over yourselves!! Stop being such "love yourself do-gooders" and live a little!!
Yah right.....Ummm, excuse me, but I'd like to pay for my bill from two years ago....Puleeeeeze!!! Thats as ridiculous as it gets. I wouldn't lose a second of sleep over it. And for the folks that think I'm probably going to hell for my nasty, selfish, dishonest thoughts....maybe I am, but I'm going cheaper than you jerkoffs!!!...LOL!!!!

Oh Please,

You are correct. When this happened to us I felt like we won the lottery. Mind you we did not run out on the bill (see my previous post) Like I said we had charged everything to the bill. Our everything included 3 lb lobster dinners (it was my favorite so I had it every night)Porterhouse steak dinners, champagne, gifts and water and stuff like that from the gift shop, afternoon cocktails, breakfast room service and movies!I forgot to add that our room was a large waterfront suite!
Oh Well! Like I said not our fault. Upon checkout we paid with our card and signed the receipt for the correct amount. What happened after that is not my problem!

Jim,
Has the credit card in question expired and been replaced by a new card? If so then the hotel charges in question can't just show up on a bill. The hotel would have to contact you in order to get the new expiration date on the card.
The chances of that happening two years down the road are slim and none.

About 12 years ago, I stayed at a Marriott Resort and used points to pay for a 14-day stay. We decided to extend our stay by 3 additional days at our expense. We charged food, beverages and souvenirs to our room so we would accumulate points. We paid with a credit card when we checked out. Upon arriving home, we received a statement from Marriott which reflected more points than we had before. They failed to deduct the points for the 14-day stay and simply added the acquired points from the additional 3-day stay, as well as for the food, etc. Now we were entitled to a free 17-day stay at a Marriott Resort. Should I have said "No thank you". Well, I didn't do that. I went back 2 years later and had a wonderful (free) time and I don't feel the least bit ashamed.

Wonder if some of these "Oh, you must tell to clear your soul" folks would refuse to accept the lottery big bucks payout if they got it as a result of 2 tickets being printed when they only paid for one, and the second one ended up with the winning numbers.
Bet they'd keep it.

To bet, susan one who knows, free trip, oh please, and anon:
I knew my particular posts would draw out comments from some people. If you think that they at all make me feel differently well you are wrong. It does not matter what you say, in the end you and I will be accountable for every action and word. Does that mean I have never done one thing wrong? Not at all. If you re read Jims original post and one further on he explains that he was feeling anxious regarding this. No matter what you or I say this is his deal to contend with. Any other questions or comments?? This is not between him and the resort, it is between him and his maker. This forum is a great place to have the opponent stir things up. It is really fun to be able to express my own view, as it seems you feel the same way. Peace and happy traveling.

To Bet, I would hope if winning the lottery on a mistake of 2 tickets, they would give something "back". Helping others is really what it is all about. If you just take, take, and take and never give you don't end up feeling good about yourself. Why is Jim even posting in the first place?? We all have opinions and we should be free to share out thoughts. I still contend, he feels a sense of guilt or why hasn't he put it to rest?? After 2 years he has not.

I cannot help but agree with xxx on this issue. Simply turning around and doing a good generous deed may clear up his anxiety and guilt over this. To look over your bill for 2 years and wonder about the statue of limitations says something about where he is at with this. Naturally the resort is not suffering, that is not the point. Using that is a justification. Not one post here suggested he call and offer to pay etc. I really enjoy this forum to learn about possible vacation spots, not to discern over moral issues, so with this it is my final post, I am sure that will please some of you. To Jim, clear it up one way or another to give you some peace!! It is not worth 2 years of wondering. Happy trails...

Jim, don't worry about it. You did your part; maybe the hotel got paid by the cc company. I doubt if after two years, the charge will appear on your cc. If it does, pay it. But I wouldn't lose any sleep over it if I were you.

Jim. Forget about it now and book another holiday out of it. The do gooders would probably do the same if the situation arose. You did your bit by giving your card details so consider it "done and dusted".

jim, it's perfectly ok, everyone deserves a break now and then. had you brought it to the hotels attention someone no doubt would have gotten in trouble for the mess up and been fired so think of it this way you saved someone there job. let it go, i don't think they look back at there books after each year is up.
