You can purchase small water proof pouches (with a string to keep around your neck) at your local dive shop or sports store that are perfect for just that sort of thing. Some are small enough to keep in the pocket of men's swim trunks. If you'd rather not spend the money a zip-lock sandwich bag works just as well.
You are wise not to leave your valuables unattended. Just because an island has palm trees and beautiful waters doesn't mean you should not use common sense.

You can buy one of those waterproof containers that you can hang from your neck and tuck into your swimsuit. Something like this:
