vacation cost
Hi folks. Just got back from a cruise that visited St. Thomas, St. John, and St. Martin. Now we are looking to stay at one of these islands, minus the ship. Including plane tickets from Miami, what could I expect to pay for 2 adults for 1 week in a nice (or very nice) place? I know this is a very general question, but I'm looking for ballpark figures. With some of the great deals that come out for Hawaii, I'm wondering if the carribean is competitive. Thanks in advance.

Why don't you just look this up based on the dates/hotels you want? It's pretty widely variable--Christmas vs. hurricane season vs. summer off-season. What "nice" means to you---to me that's a Marriot, and "very nice" is Caneel Bay. My guess? $200-300 each for airfare, plus anywhere from $150-800 a night for room (some AI). It really depends.

The Caribbean is competitive for people who live on the East Coast who don't want to fly 10 hours for a week's vacation, and who like Caribbean culture (different, depending on the island).

http://www.virginislandsdailynews.com/index.pl/article_home?id=753469

You can also try sites like AA.com for package deals just for reference and there are usually deals to be found both air and land. High end places like Caneel Bay or the Ritz command more but there are plenty of inexpensive and moderate condos, villas, B&B's and resorts year round. Glad you enjoyed and hope to see you here soon!

We live in NY and we travel to upscale resorts the last week of the summer season which is November, for 2 reasons. Its less crowded and its a little less expensive than travelling Dec,Jan & Feb. To be honest, our vacations for 2 cost $10,000.00. That is including everything. I am not bragging (not leaving a name) and I do not want to get bashed. That is what we spend. You can definately go for less, but we always get a Suite/Oceanfront/Cottage, we go to all the best restaurants and we have lots of drinks and we do fly first/business. I know we are not the only ones that spend that kind of money, all the resorts we have been to are always booked! Vacations cost a lot of money and I guess when the economy gets tough, vacations are the first thing off the "to do" list. That might explain the Hawaii deals.

Just returned from St John. I would stay here in a heart beat vs St Thomas. I haven't been to St Martin, but hear it is similiar to St Thomas. Rented a villa for 4 that cost us $2,000 for 6 days. We had free air tickets, went to the grocery store for breakfast foods and most lunches. We ate at the lower end places (price wise $8-$15)such as Duffy's, Banana Deck, Beach Bar, JJ's Texas Cafe and were happy. We wished that many of the other restaurants would have served their lunch menus at dinner since we are not big eaters. You'll love St John!
