For snorkeling, nature, and romance, St. John is IT! I would suggest you take a Ferry over to Red Hook, St. Thomas, to get in a little night life, then head back to the tranquility of St. John. That way you get the best of both worlds. Ferries are only $3 or $4 a person each way.

I am currently planning a trip to Vieques and am trying to stay at Hacienda Tamarindo. Reviews are great and we love the idea of a bed and breakfast atmosphere. The island seems to have everything we need. We'll let you know how we progress. Good luck with your adventure!

Melissa,
You might enjoy St. Eustatius (Statia) which is part of the Dutch Antilles. It is a beautiful island with a dead volcano on it. The eco-system inside the volcano is that of a rainforest while the rest of the island is coral, with low-lying trees. There is also a really spectacular beach there (although it has a very strong under current, so swimming is recommended from the other end of the island). The Gin House hotel is a charming old hotel that will probably meet your needs. It also has an excellent restaurant. The island has great snorkeling, close to shore. You can walk the entire island, no need for a taxi and it is completely safe. I am a 40 year old woman and I traveled there alone and felt perfectly comfortable walking back to my hotel, alone, late at night.

St. Jon-caneel Bay. With a request for Cottage #7 but not rooms A or B. But C,D, F, G,are away from the more resort part of Hawks Nest or Turtle Bay, though they are fine. The snorkeling is great as said above.. An outing with Sally and her Tug Boat snorkeling is a hoot. The food in the late 1990's and our last visit in 2004 was good but not up to the standards of this beautiful resort with 175 acres and 180 oir so guests spread out over the property.
The Bitter End on Virgin Gorda I think is a bit touristy but everyone tells mew Biras Creek is small 30+ units, very good snorkeling (almost as good as St. John) and fine dining that beats Caneel by a long shot. We enjoyed Peter Island last year but the access to great snorkeling was not equal to St. John or Virgin Gorda and we did not like all the buffets and it seemed a little stuffy to us. But, the food was better than Caneel or Little Dix.
In my opinion, I would not revisit Young Island Resort for free , though the island is unspoiled that resort is far over-rated and the snorkeling in the immediate area is just o'k. If you take a boat tour to Tobago Cay, a long day trip, the snorkeling is superb but that is one day out of 6-7.
I hope some of this helps.
