Trips from east St. Thomas to St. John

My husband and I are taking a quick getaway to St. Thomas. Not too interested in the Charlotte Amalie scene (did that years ago) but we are staying at the Wyndam which is good proximity to Red Hook. Any good references about snorkeling? How about a good stop off of the ferry at St. John for day trips to good spots. Any recommendations on renting a small boat for a day or charters that were reasonable? Thanks for any help. How far is Red Hook ferry from the Wyndam, it looks close. Any restaurants in Red Hook? Thanks!

Best snorkeling is on St John at Trunk Bay and other beaches. Short 30 kminute ferry ride to St John, then you can have a jinty take you to the beaches. You can rent snorkel equipment from the vendors approved by National Park Service at the beaches. Do not know distance from hotel to ferry nor eating places. Have fun

Wyndham to Red Hook is only about 3 miles. You can snorkel at Sapphire Beach, which is halfway to Red Hook, or at Coki Beach, which is just a couple of miles in the opposite direction (W of Wyndham).

From Red Hook you can take the passenger ferry to St. John ($3 per person, one way, hourly from about 6:30 am to 10 or 11 pm) or the car ferry ($27 for car and passengers, RT) if you have a rental car and the company allows it to go to St. John.

Lots of good snorkeling spots on St. John - if you take the passenger ferry, you can take open-air "taxis" to them, or rent a vehicle for the day in Cruz Bay. Trunk Bay is the most famous and gets crowded. Others: Cinnamon, Jumbie, Hawksnest, Maho, Francis, Leinster, Waterlemon Cay (and more).

There are many restaurants in Red Hook but the only ones we patronized were the Grateful Deli (great sandwiches) and Duffy's, which is known more for its bar than its food.

Here are some other choices in Red Hook - Caribbean Steak House & Saloon is directly across the street from Duffy's and is both a great restaurant and a great bar. Off the Hook (the old Cafe Wahoo) is a few steps down the road and is another nice place.

You are also very close by car to Compass Point and either Dotties or Raffles down there.....Mims is just next door at the Watergate complex and a couple more minutes down the road takes you to Blue Moon Cafe at Secret Harbour.

Schultz

Linda,
There are several good places to eat right in/around(very, very short distance drive) to Red Hook.'
The Whale of the Tale has really good food right in Red Hook right on the docks,Blue Moon at Secret Harbour is really, really good with a great beach for the ambiance and the kids can go down and play while you finish dinner/glass of wine, the beach is right by your table. We were told to have reservations, but we were only one of three tables there while we were there, Raffles is awesome, the food was fantastic, eclectic in appearance, open mike night was really fun,it was really great, and the Agave Terrace was the most expensive place we ate, but the view was awesome,do call maybe even a day ahead for reservations and get a table on the outside patio, the food was fantastic, the service the best we have ever had at any resort/restaurant we have ever been to, the lobster, snapper was great, and the dish with pasta- "something Joseph" was the best pasta/seafood dish I've ever tasted. The desserts are sinful, we ordered a variety and sampled each others, the Key Lime Cake, the Chocolate Cake with Chocolate filling, and the "Snoball" were the very best.Agave was expensive, the most we ate at the whole week, but it was a treat.

Linda,
If you will go the U.S.Virgin Islands here in this forum to the post titled"Best tour/charter from St. Thomas you will find my reply. We were in St.Thomas June/2000 and the rate for the Stormy Petrel was $100.00 per person, lunch at Cooper Island was extra. Have a great time, we did even though St.Thomas is a little too crowded for us, we loved being with our kids and having a great family vacation.
