My thoughts and prayers are still with you and Ellie.
When/if the time comes, I thought you might find some degree of comfort by reading the Rainbow Bridge poem.

Thank you so much! I have read that and it is comforting. Sadly, we just got back from the Er with the pup and we had her put to sleep. Ellie was always a fighter and it took a double injection! I am laughing at that through tears. Everyone here has been so kind and I really appreciate the well wishes. I think that it will be a relief to be in the Caribbean next week since our house seems so empty right now.

Karen,
I am SO sorry to hear about Ellie.
If it helps at all, you made a brave and noble decision for Ellie.
We are only caretakers for our beloved pets, and to let one of them go is often the ultimate in care.
Hold on to your memories...and know that many here share your grief.

oh, I am so sorry. I kept hoping that Ellie would be able to make it--possibly with one of those carts for dogs' rear legs to still keep them mobile. Euthanizing a pet is one of the most wrenching things we can ever face. Even when it's the right decision, as it clearly was for Ellie. Your story played out exactly the way ours did with our Truman. at the time I had never heard of sudden paralysis in a dog, but since that time I've heard more and more stories that echo his. I'm truly sorry for you and your husband.

Thanks to everyone for the thoughts. It has been a tough day! I threw myself into cleaning and had those "moments" when vacuuming dog hair and dealing with bowls and a leash. I still can't look at the toys...they can wait. DH has run a few miles, walked a few with me and has given the punching bag a real work out! It has been great to come to this site between breaks/tears to read the kind thoughts. I hope everyone has a wonderful week!
On the bright side....school is over on Friday and off to the Caribbean.

Karen, I just read the post and I am so very sorry for your huge loss. You have both lost a very special member of your family and I know (as do many others on this board)how much you guys are hurting. I hope the love and concern of others will help lessen your pain. Thank God Ellie came to you and your husband as she obviously received 14 years of wonderful love, happiness and security (not to mention great meals!). May you both share laughter over all the many memorable and funny moments you had with her, while sipping something fun on the beach of course !! My prayers are with you both ><> phyllis

pets really do become family. I'm sure some Caribbean therapy will do you good next week.
