Things to do in Aruba

Friends have asked us to go to Aruba with them in February, 2002. I have heard lots of good things about Aruba, but wonder what there is to do for active people who only like to be beach bums for a couple of hours max?? We do snorkle, which I know we can do there, but anything else? Any comments will be appreciated.

Sue, there is a lot to do in Aruba, no matter what your interests are.

I like hanging out at the beach in the morning, but you can fry if you do it all day. You could walk from hotel to hotel (if situated on Palm Beach), stop for a drink at any hotel and a swim and just take in the sights.

I would take a snorkel trip and preferably one that goes out to the scuttled German freighter. The boats are moored right along the beach, just sign up. Also take a sunset cruise which is fun and romantic.

I climbed the "hoolberg" or Haystack Mountain, but it was a lot of work and just OK. I like to rent motor scooters and head up to the lighthouse and over to the Natural Bridge on the winward side. That's fun.

Take a trip over to the Casabari rock formation which is inland, that's pretty neat.

The island is 19 miles long and six miles wide and fun to explore. You can also visit Baby Beach and snorkel there.

In addition, there is a native crafts and talent show downtown in Oranjestad on Tuesday evenings and most hotels have an event one evening each, like a barbeque, or a limbo show, etc.

There are some great restaurants around, also and the Alhambra Casino, as well as some other casinos in some hotels.

You can get around easily by bus, which stops at every hotel and run until evening.

Have fun!

In addition to the above you can go horseback riding, play tennis, golf, beach volley ball, take a jeep safari (this was fun but not for those who mind getting a bit dirty from the trip)and in the evening there are some good clubs downtown for partying. There is also a 'party' bus at night which is fun.

The jeep tour was great! We were definitely dirty when we came back (even after stops for two swims) but we had a great time!

We love to explore the smaller towns on the island and take pictures. There are a few wonderful cemetaries which are very unique - all decorated with flowers. Look in the paper for local arts and crafts events. Also a drive to San Nicholas to visit "Charlie's Bar" - a very unique place. Stay out of San Nicholas at night!

Hi Sue,

If you get a chance to rent a car (sometimes they give coupons, but you have to spend half a day in the hotel) check out baby beach. When we went we brought a little bread and got great photos of the fish.
