T&C: Provo Safety

T&C: Safety in Provo

We've just planned a trip to T&C for April, and I came along a trip report posted by someone who just came back from the island; they said that the island is a poor island and all American tourists should be very careful while on the island as it is not safe. She said the it is best to stay on the resort and venture out…

What?!?

All along, we thought that T&C is one of the safer and wealthier islands in the Caribbean.

Do any of you who’ve been there have a perspective? Thanks for your feedback!

Where did you find this trip report? We were in Provo earlier this month and no, we do not think the island is poor. Actually it is overall a pretty expensive/wealthy island compared to others IMHO. We stayed at a villa and puttered around town and we did not fear for our safety at any time. That's not to say crime doesn't happen, it does (as with anywhere). Just take the usual precautions and don't venture to isolated beaches unless you are with a group.

Oh Bull*%$#@...whoever wrote it is crazy! T&C is one of the safe islands but, there have been problems, people walking alone at 2 am, or going off to private "off the beaten path beaches" has been a problem of late...with the global economy , just like the US people are laid off, construction has stopped and people are traveling less--all of that makes people do things to get $$. Grace Bay is beautiful , very busy , private Villas are fine too, just don't go off as I said to private beaches to be alone. Part of the charm of TCI is venturing out, going to Blue Hills, hitting the great restaurants and resorts at night etc. It is a higher priced Island for sure, expensive to stay, eat and drink ! We were there in January and going this summer.

I don't know where you read that report but it is definitely untrue. Provo is a relatively safe island. You don't see poverty. It has a low level of unemployment.

Thanks....wheeeew. I feel better. I came across a trip report on scuba.com where they were talking about how poor and unsafe it is....

Thanks for your input. We certainly think and agree that one has to be smart about where and when they venture out...common sense should tell you.

I was just shocked by the comments in that trip report...

Thanks agian.

We were there in March. We walked to dinner on the sidewalks and home again at around 10-10:30PM and never felt threatened in any way.

Have a great trip!

on my first trip to provo i traveled with a girlfriend. we rented a villa on taylor bay beach. we ventured out to dinner our 2nd night on island. had a wonderful dinner and a few cocktails. on our way home we managed to get a tiny bit lost. then we found ourselves on a dark deadend street with not much room to turn around except at the end of the road. there was a group of 'belongers' walking on the road. they seemed a bit boisterous and we were nervous to say the least. so we are in an open jeep - we get to where the people are walking. one asks if we are lost. we get more nervous. so it turns out they are an extended family unit walking home from church - They were sober and extremely nice - they gave us perfect directions to get back to our villa.
provo is a very well off island compared with say jamaica or mexico. as stated above what you read is just plain a lie. i looked on scuba.com and could not find the report you read...

I read it...this person did not even stay on Provo...so anything they wrote was something they heard not experienced!
Worthless review of Provo, may help if someone was going on the dive/boat they went on!

I would use this post as a cautionary tale to people: Do not take one isolated report on the web as gospel. It's surprising the way people zero in on one negative posting they might see about a place -- with no perspective as to how accurate or reflective it is of other accounts.

e17345: Will you do some diving while on Provo? If so, which outfit do you plan to go with?
